St. GermainHair of the Dog — Hangover Helpers

Cures for what ails you during
August, the dog days of summer

August is the eighth month, renamed by the Romans to honor their emperor, Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus. It is the height of summer in the Northern Hemisphere's temperate zone, and the longest days of the year have passed. (But the hot days remain.) In Roman times, Aug. 24 was usually the last of the "dies caniculares," or dog days, named for the appearance of Sirius, the "dog star," brightest of the stars in the constellation Canis Major, or greater dog.

There was a popular 17th-century Scottish folk remedy for rabies, of course, that involved the "hair of the dog," or placing hair from the dog that bit you into the wound to ward off or cure rabies. (Here's a tip: it doesn't work.) The phrase came to be used as a reference for hangover cures that involve alcohol.

Send us your favorite hangover cure (non-alcoholic or hairy-dogged), and we'll pick the best one to share with readers (anonymously or, if you prefer, with credit). If we use your hangover cure, you'll win a stylish Korbel tote bag -- perfect for carrying several champagne bottles at once.

In the meantime, we suggest waiting until after the current salmonella-related egg recall to try the popular "red eye" cure: 2 oz. whiskey, 4 oz. coffee, dash of Tobasco hot sauce, pepper, orange juice and a raw egg, well-blended. Yum! Send your hangover cures to info@juniperevent.com.

August Spirits Special

Lillet Bordeaux Blanc - $15.26

Lillet

Lillet is often overlooked as a great cocktail ingredient. While technically, it may not be considered a vermouth, like a vermouth it is an aromatized and fortified wine. There are a variety of fruits, herbs and spices that make up the proprietary recipe for Lillet. One of those spices is quinine, the same ingredient found in tonic water, and this gives an ever-so-slight bitterness to the product. Created in the late 1800s, it's a wonderful appertif or light summer refresher.

The rounded bouquet features tropical fruit notes of banana and guava, and smells of ripe grapes, kiwi and a subtle spiciness. The palate entry is luscious, gently fruity and keenly acidic. The finish is ripe, delicately spiced and delicious.

Lillet FizzEnjoy Lillet chilled or on the rocks. Add a little club soda and sliced lemon, lime,  orange or fresh berries for a refreshing summer sparkler. Or try our recipe for a Lillet Fizz:

1 1/2 oz. Lillet
1/2 oz. maraschino cherry juice or grenadine
4 oz. fresh orange juice
2 oz. soda water

Stir, garnish with sliced oranges, cherries or berries and serve in a highball glass with ice. Try the light, fresh taste of Lillet, on sale this month only for $15.26.
