Do you know how we sometimes look at the results we are getting in our personal or professional life and we don’t like what we see? Why has that happened? We have been busy doing stuff. Ok but is it the right stuff that we have been doing or just a distraction of what we ought to be doing?
The more I reflected on these questions the more it became obvious that ‘our results always match our real intention’. How much Attention we give to our Intentions is really the key to success!
Let’s me explain.
First let’s me ask you these three questions:
- What results are you currently getting in your life? in your business? In your career?
- Do you know why you are getting those results?
- When you look at the results that do not satisfy you, how much attention would you say you paid to your real intentions? Which means what you REALLY want NOT what you think you want or what someone thinks you ought to have.
If you are not happy with the results you see, chances are there is a misalignment somewhere with what you really want!
Various reasons explain how we end up being out of alignment. Some of the reasons include:
1. We don’t really want to do or we don’t really want to have what we are trying to get (this can explain some of our subtle passive resistance)
2. We don’t believe we can get what we want
3. We keep using a solution that has worked well in the past but that is not adapted to our current situation
4. No clear intention in the first place: we are too fuzzy, ambiguous, unclear, unfocussed, etc
5. External causes that force us to reconsider our options
Why do you need to give attention to your intentions?
We have all heard about the need to have a balance in how we work and live, in what we eat, etc…So balance is seen as something highly desirable. When people find themselves out of balance, they are afraid and think that something is wrong with them. The truth is that in fact loosing balance is a natural phenomenon of life! Staying out of balance for too long is the issue.
Being out of balance or misalignment itself is not a bad thing. If we are aligned all the time it’s inertia, it becomes boring. In order to impulse some momentum there is a need to get out of the line. Have you ever tried to walk with the same foot all the time or to walk with both feet without being out of balance? If so you will see that very soon you will be tired and very uncomfortable.
Inertia comes when we stay in the same state for too long or when we still use a solution that has worked in the past without integrating that it has become obsolete due to rapid changes around us. We are busy in our own world sometimes that we fail to recognise that things have changed and we need to find new ways of doing things.
Alignment then is about constant checking out that what we are doing is in line with the current needs and to do the adequate readjustments. Similarly when our attention is not constantly focussed on our real intention we get off track…
How can you quickly detect where you are out of alignment?
I have developed 5 easy steps I-BIDETMto identify where your misalignments lie in 1 hour or less.
1. Issue: Choose an area in your life where you don’t like the results you are getting
2. Beliefs: Examine the thoughts and beliefs that you hold that contribute to this result. Did you really believe you could achieve that goal or is this goal/ activity something you thought was unrealistic?
3. Intention: What was your real intent? Was is something you genuinely wanted to do? Did you do this to please someone? Did you think that it was something you ought to do?(be honest with yourself)
4. Declaration: Who have you committed to? Who was aware of your intention that held you accountable? Did you really mean what you promised? Or did you have a hidden agenda? (you said something but that wasn’t something you intend to do)
5. Execution : how have you executed this task/goal? How often? How long? With which intensity?
Practise yourself
Now take an issue that you have been dealing recently or something that is frustrating you right now and try to use I-BIDETM model to find where the misalignments are.
Use this simple but powerful technique for situation that went well too and analyse why you got these results. Compare your results with previous and identify contributing factors to success and destructive factors..
