Smiles of Success
at 2009 Achievement Program

After a year of terrific effort and exemplary projects, 4-H members, volunteer leaders and extension staff were recognized on Sunday, Oct. 4 at the annual Achievement Program at the Red Lion Hotel in Aurora.  Nearly 200 attended the reception, which was emceed by the Junior Leaders, who took on "Survivor"-style team contests amidst audience laughter and applause. Awards were given for "Tools of the Project", "Learn by Doing" "Make the Best Better" and other honors.  Members were recognized for accomplishments at the County Fair, State Consumer Choices Contest, Fashion Revue and much more.


Please Pick Up Projects and Awards

Members are asked to pick up any unclaimed awards and projects at the Extension office by Nov. 30. Any uncollected awards will be returned to our supply inventory and state fair projects and record books will be discarded. Due to increased postage costs, we will not be able to mail any of these items.



4-H Fall Fest Cancelled

Due to lack of involvement, the 4-H Fall Fest that was scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7 has been cancelled.



Calling All Creative Cooks!

Challenge your knowledge of meal planning, food safety and nutrition at the 2010 Creative Cooks Contest. Cloverbuds and older members are welcome to participate!  The contest starts at 9 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 13 at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds.

Bring 4-H Curriculum To Your School!


Do
your local elementary school teachers know that Arapahoe County 4-H can deliver curriculum and supplies for unique and fascinating hands-on science projects? They include:
  1. Embryology: teaches embryonic development by providing eggs that hatch into a chickens
  2. Entomology: Gives youth their own caterpillar to watch grow and change through metamorphosis into a butterfly
  3. Mini-Greenhouses: Allows students to plant three types of seed in their own greenhouse, observe germination and conduct experiments with the help of a Teacher’s Guide.

All livestock and horse exhibitors must have a Premise ID number for each animal for
ArapahoeCounty and provide this number on the 2009 – 2010 Member Enrollment Form.

NWSS Catch-a-Calf Applications Postmark Deadline- Nov. 15

The National Western Catch-a-Calf program is designed so success­ful participants catch a calf at a NWSS rodeo perfor­mance and win the opportunity to take a calf home and raise it, and then return to the NWSS one year later to show the animal as a market steer. The deadline to postmark your application is Nov. 15.

A New 4-H Year Begins!

Enrollment is in full swing for Arapahoe County 4-H! Any youth age 5-18 years as of Dec. 31, 2009 may join. Children ages 5-7 enroll in the Cloverbud project, which explores a variety of 4-H topics and is noncompetitive. Youth ages 8-18 enroll in 4-H projects of their choice.

Winter Is Here! What To Do When It Snows...


If it is after 4:30 p.m. and you are wondering if a County 4-H event is canceled because of inclement weather, please call the Extension Office at 303-730-1920 and listen to the recorded message. Clubs are urged to make a decision about what they will do in bad weather conditions and communicate that decision to the club members.



New Volunteer Leader Orientation

6:30-8:30 p.m., November 18
Extension Office Meeting Room

4-H Extension staff members teach this fun and informative two-hour orientation, which is required for all new 4-H leaders. You will learn background information on the 4-H program, helpful hints for working with your project groups and much more! RSVP to Shaylen at 303-730-1920.

New leaders are also invited to schedule appointments with Shaylen Florez to look through project manuals, ask questions and get assistance in completing forms.


Club Financial Summaries & EINs

An audit form for each club's 2009 Financial Summary will be mailed to organization leaders in December. The form should be completed by a committee of 3 club members and 1adult (not a leader) directly related to the club, and submitted by Jan.. 31.  All clubs with checking accounts must also submit their Employer ID Number (EIN) to the Extension office. To apply for an EIN through the IRS, click here.
