Opening Night with Shana Robbins and Amy Myers

Over 450 people—friends, family, artists, students, scene-makers—jammed into ACAC on July 9 for the opening of Shana Robbins: Supernatural Conductor and Amy Myers: Feminine Space. The crowds viewed Myers's two massive and elegant drawings in one gallery, and various Robbins works (costumes, videos, photos, drawings) in the others. Excitement was in the air as a tuxedoed pianist played ragtime on a Steinway and Robbins was revealed to be outside, laying in the plush white interior of a wooden coffin that was visible through the window. It started to rain and lightning flashed. The pianist left his seat and went outside to dig away the dirt covering the casket. Lifting the lid, he allowed the black-clad Robbins to exit and enter the gallery. She moved her lithe body in a jerky fashion, retreating behind the large ornate web made of Victorian doilies that is featured prominently in her installation. Quickly changing her costume, she emerged as a bandaged and chain-adorned zombie, moving through the throngs of people in stylized fits and thrusts. Lights pulsed and music (including America's "You Can Do Magic") played. Robbins was "back from the dead" and ready to party, as was everyone else.
