GBF Hosts Second Annual Capacity Building Workshop for Investees On Wednesday, June 9, 2010, the Grassroots Business Fund (GBF) kicked off a two-day capacity building workshop for its investee firms. The genesis of the workshop evolved from the common challenges that GBF witnessed entrepreneurs struggling with as they sought to drive sustainable growth in their respective businesses. The objectives of the workshop were to explore systematic ways of approaching and addressing these common themes, assist the entrepreneurs in adopting a framework to think about these issues, share potential solutions, create synergies, and develop a follow-on program to support the practical application of these solutions. “It was very useful to be exposed to newer ideas, concepts, and players in various capacities that benefit changes necessary for our enterprise to grow and prosper,” said one entrepreneur.
The workshop centered on three interconnected technical areas: investment readiness, managing by numbers, and corporate governance. “Investment Readiness” focused on identifying the key building blocks entrepreneurs needed to secure external funding and a discussion over how to manage the process. “Managing by Numbers” emphasized the importance of understanding the critical assumptions and drivers behind the business model and managing the business by them. “Corporate Governance” highlighted the guiding principles of accountability and transparency, the value a board of directors offers, and the practicalities of establishing functioning boards.
