DISGUISE – THE DEBUT EP FROM GIRL IN THE RED DRESS

Girl In The Red Dress

To celebrate my 29th birthday, I'm thrilled to present the music that I have been working on for the last year, during the post-production of my movie.

For those of you new to the story, these are original songs that I have recorded under the name Girl In The Red Dress, who is also a character I play in "Dirty Step Upstage". On her debut EP she performs three songs:

Disguise

Disguise - I chose this as the title track because it helps to tell the origin story of the Girl. It’s a fast rocking song with an awesome guitar solo by the amazing Rowan Robertson (see ALM Spotlight). I love this song, and it’s a great way to introduce both the EP and Girl In The Red Dress. This song also plays over the end credits of “Dirty Step Upstage."

Nothing But My Heartbeat

(Nothing But My) Heartbeat – A slower club anthem song, taking its theme and rhythm from a heartbeat sound effectheard through the “Dirty Step Upstage”. The song itself isn't on the film's soundtrack, but it captures the Girl’s emotional state before, and even during, the transformation she goes through. It's a song for anyone still haunted by an ex-lover.

Dirty Step Upstage

Dirty Step Upstage – The EP ends with the title track of my movie, to leave you wanting more! This song provided many firsts for me. It was my introduction to working with the fabulous Chris G. at Studio Chicago, and the first time I performed with Rowan Robertson, whose natural instinct for what the song needed nearly blew my mind. Plus it was my first professionally recorded and produced track. This is where my music odyssey started, and the journey's going to continue well into thefuture - because the Girl has many more things to say…

These songs are what I like to call “Killer Pop". They have an edginess and darkness to them in an electronic pop-rock style, influenced by Michael Jackson, Nine Inch Nails, Bjork, Phil Collins, Madonna, Ozzie Osbourne. Peter Gabriel, Justin Timberlake, Gavin Rossdale, Katy Perry, Rob Zombie. Evanescence, Lamb, Moloko, Shiny Toy Guns ...to name just a few.

You can download all the singles on Soundclick.com or Amazon.com. More stores coming soon.

Q & A

Q: Music obviously plays a big part in your film – but did you always intend to perform on the soundtrack yourself?

A: Great question. Sometimes I forget that it wasn't the plan all along. :-) Real life played a part in shaping DSU's soundtrack, just as it did with the film's story, the shoot and the edit.

I had originally composed a song for another character, but well after principal photography was finished the idea of adapting the song for the part that I play started to grow. Without giving too much away, I knew I needed to illuminate a deeper level of my character, who isn't often seen in the movie because I was mostly behind the camera, filming. The title track, "Dirty Step Upstage", gave me a chance to share the after-story and the inner turmoil that she endures.

I had such a great time in the studio that I took "Disguise", a personal song I had written a while ago, and adapted that for Girl as well. It plays during the film's closing credits, and provides a snappy retrospective to the story. It's a fun, upbeat way to start an album, and a surreal way to end a dark film.

Creating my own original music for the soundtrack (which has already been called "memorable and infectious" has opened up a whole new creative path for me, and I'm looking forward to exploring it with a vengeance.

Rowan Robertson

SPOTLIGHT ON ALM FRIENDS

ROWAN ROBERTSON

As a teenager in the UK, Rowan sent a demo tape to a fan club of the infamous 80s rock band Dio. It eventually got into the hands of Ronnie James Dio himself, who flew Rowan over to LA for an audition. Rowan got the job and at 17 he was rocking the lead guitar in arenas of over 100,000 people. I feel hugely honored, not only to have seen this man work (if you can call it that; it looks so easy when he plays), but also to be his friend. His signature shredding can be found on “Disguise” and “Dirty Step Upstage", and he has a a cameo in the movie.

Check him out on Wikipedia and MySpace.
