This Month's Photo: Production Shot From Dirty Step Upstage

Every month I will share a photograph with you. I chose this production still from my upcoming directorial debut Dirty Step Upstage for the first monthly ALM Talkies newsletter because of the mysterious composition. I feel that with the recent completion of the movie, I am just getting ready to hit the stage and show everyone what I have been keeping a secret for the last three years. I'm done putting on my make-up and I'm about to give you a show.

"Let's start at the very beginning, it's a very good place to start..." – Sound of Music
I'll attribute my musical theater background to that reference. I've spent most of my life doing some kind of performing art, whether dancing, singing, acting, or all three. That background gave me the framework to base my future work and to incorporate those art forms into my movies.

Catwoman: Resolution

Catwoman Resolution

In 2005 some film friends from the UK came to visit me in New York for New Year's Eve. We thought it would be fun to make a short Catwoman fan film, so I decided to take a crack at producing with only three weeks to prepare. I co-wrote the script, another first for me, and over a couple of very chilly, winter nights in Manhattan we shot the 12 minute film that has since been featured on fan sites and recently screened at Herofest, an action film festival.

ALM Talkies

Catwoman: Resolution gave me the bug for producing, so shortly before attending the 2006 Cannes Film Festival as a producer I formed ALM Talkies. My first project was originally intended to be an animated series about an Albino Love Monkey named Pongee. That idea developed until I discovered the cost of animation was a lot more than my indie company could handle. I continued to develop different projects until one finally took off...

I have Dov S-S Simens to thank for my directorial debut. I was half-way through taking his infamous 2-Day Film School course, when something he said really hit home: "Why would you produce someone else's film? Write and direct your own!" It took awhile to really take seed, but one day I knew that my first film would be based on a rather unpleasant situation that happened to me while at a music market in the south of France. We just completed post-production and will be sharing behind-the-scenes videos and festival stories soon.

Girl In The Red Dress

Girl In The Red Dress

Dirty Step Upstage took a while to complete, I think because there was something missing. I was at a stand-still in the editing process and decided to attend an artist residency in India for inspiration. What I experienced was a sensual overload, with the vibrant colors and the ever-presence of music and dance in everyday life. I soaked in Bollywood culture both in the cinema and on set in Mumbai; by the time I left I had incredibly detailed storyboards for a music and dance number. Girl in the Red Dress is the fruit of my Indian adventure, who is both a character in Dirty Step Upstage and also the creator of the original music recorded for the soundtrack.

Q & A

"Q: What's the deal with your logo and what does ALM Talkies mean anyway?

A: I was born on September 23, 1980, the year of the monkey in the Chinese zodiac. I've been obsessed with primates ever since I can remember and I have quite the collection of various monkey memorabilia to attest to that fact. Another related obsession: I've gotten a tattoo every three years since I was 18. I found myself in a difficult transition while I was moving away from London when I was 24 and felt the need to design a tattoo that somehow expressed or connected to something deep inside me. The monkey was an obvious choice. Everything else was a blur; my Albino Love Monkey was born. After I got the ink and was laughing over its name, I told my dad that if I ever had a production company I would call it Albino Love Monkey. It wasn't until much later, when I was in fact forming my production company, that I realized the synchronicity: my Albino Love Monkey also shared my initials. I took the tattoo as a blueprint for my logo, tacked on a name to allude to the days when rules for movies were being broken left and right, and ALM Talkies was born.

SPOTLIGHT ON ALM FRIENDS

In the final throes of post-production I never thought I was going to find a business that could help finish Dirty Step Upstage within my indie budget. Bridges in Chicago did it all, with amazing quality and service. I was even able to commission a new and improved animated logo for the movie! Now if only I can get a budget to make my next Catwoman fan film on their amazing green screen!
