MBA Hosts a Water Conservation Seminar, Lunch, and Networking On Friday February 27th, 2009, Gov. Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency due to the water supply shortage in California. The shortage of water supplies are due to three years of below-average rain and snowfall in California, and court-ordered cutbacks in pumping water from the Sacramento delta, a major source of Southern California’s drinking water.
The various water agencies serving San Diego communities are taking measures to encourage the public to conserve water. For example, the Santa Fe Irrigation and the Olivenhain Municipal Water Districts have employed Cook & Schmid, a public relations, advertising and marketing agency, to create a public relations and community outreach plan to educate customers about water supply shortages and conservation programs within their service areas.
In addition, although still not in effect, water agencies are moving towards a monthly water allocation plan. The San Diego Water Authority website describes how water allocation would work: “As long as your water use remained within your allocation, you're good. However, if you used more water than your allocation permits, you could face fines and penalties. If your water usage remained excessive, you might experience a disruption in water service”.
Aside from the short term consequences of water shortage, availability of sufficient drinking water in the long run is a serious concern due to the ongoing increase of the human population and warming of our planet. Therefore, it is paramount for everyone to live a sustainable life and learn to conserve water. The business plan of the 21st century must incorporate sustainability measures, and parents of the 21st century must teach their children the importance and methods of water conservation. With proper education, we can learn strategies to be water wise, live a sustainable life, and avoid high water usage fees.
We have invited water conservation expert, Kelly Mooney, from the San Diego Water Authority to speak on the state of the water shortage in California, measures we can take to conserve in our homes and businesses, and rebates available to water-wise consumers.

It Feels Good to Do Good

On March 16th, 2009, the Central San Diego chapter of MBA held a free financial management seminar along with a food drive for the San Diego Food Bank. MBA members Liz Dang Samuel (Ameriprise Financial) and Cristen Lebsack (Work At Home Support) delivered fabulous seminars on financial planning and management. We were also able to raise 55 pounds of food (equivalent of 43 meals) for the San Diego Food Bank. Thanks to our MBA member sponsors for their generous support of this event, and to all the wonderful women business owners who attended the seminar and donated so much needed cans of food at this time of economic hardship for San Diego residents.
