Change Your Mindset, Change Your Life
I stumbled upon this book, "Mindset, the New Psychology of Success" in our local library and chose it for our book club for the months of May and June. This book provides strategies for a different outlook on life, and on the way we treat ourselves, our co-workers, bu sines associates, friends, spouses, and most importantly, our children. Take a few hours a week to read this book, you will be glad you did.

After Hour Networking and Balanced Motherhood Don't Mix
As a business owner I am always looking for networking events where I can meet new people and learn from successful entrepreneurs. San Diego has a vibrant business community, and such networking events are abundant. However, to my dismay as a mother, most of these events occur in the evening when I want to spend time with my family. Both of my kids attend school, and my husband works full time, so between the time they get home and my kids’ bed time, we only have three to four hours to spend quality time together as a family. For a while, I tried to talk myself and my family into the benefits of these events, but the heart wrenching experience of peeling my kids off my legs when it was time to leave, or the missed opportunity of having a quality conversation with them about their day, made me realize that after hour networking and seminars are not for me. It has been a while since I decided to avoid borrowing from my family time to network, and from a purely professional point of view, I knew I was missing a lot. A constant chattering in my brain would often leave me with doubt, until I received a Mother’s Day gift form my daughter this year, which assured me I was doing the right thing. As a school project, she made a booklet in which she had to describe things about her mom. Here is an excerpt of what she wrote: - I love my Mom because she reads me chapter books
- I love my Mom because she helps me with everything
- I love my Mom because she taught me how to read
- I love my Mom because she finds time to sit down with me
- I know my Mom cares because she hugs me and kisses me
- I love my Mom because she works so hard at her job
Reading her assignment made me realize that she not only notices that I work hard during the day, she also appreciates the fact that I make the time to tend to her needs. You are probably wondering how a parent business owner who needs to work at the office all day can find time to network? To me, networking should be incorporated into the work day, and can be easily combined with a lunch time break. There are alternatives out there, if we choose to entertain them and view a balanced life as a necessary part of our being. After all, if we figured out a way to travel to the moon and back, we can surely find a way to be productive professionally and fulfilled personally. If you are a mom business owner looking for a networking group that is dedicated to your success both at a personal and a professional level, explore Mom Business Associates (MBA). I created MBA as an answer to my desire for a balanced life, maybe you can find what you are looking for in our meetings too. Taking Care of Business Requires Taking Care of You
Becoming a mother is a life changing experience, which is both absolutely beautiful and at the same time overwhelming. Add to that the responsibilities of owning a business, and we find ourselves working round the clock to take care of everyone except us. The ability to sustain this level of activity requires moms to find ways to build stamina. This is easier said than done, but it is not impossible. A short 20 minute power walk every day around your neighborhood can do wonders for your physical and mental health. If you are constantly driving around during the day for business or taking kids to soccer practice, and have no time to walk, try DriveTime Yoga, which provides training for yoga exercises that can be done behind the wheel. Or try doing some stretch exercises after the kids go to bed, and before you let your fingers do the walking on the keyboard. A little bit of taking care of ourselves every day goes a long way towards building a strong personal and professional life.
Make a commitment to yourself to do a little bit every day for your health, you will be amazed at the results. |
