Starting a Business? Include a Plan for Your Family in Your Business Plan

Ever since the Enron and other corporate scandals surfaced, and the massive layoffs associated with the global recession ensued, the American workforce has come to the realization that the safety net associated with full time employment no longer exists.  For many, the answer is to exit the employee mindset and enter into a self-employment venture, in the hopes of having more control over their future.

As appealing as self-employment may sound, running a business and actually earning a sustainable living out of it is not a trivial task.  Entrepreneurship involves risk taking, and having the stomach to manage the regular ups and downs associated with running a business.  The good news is that there are a plethora of government-sponsored resources and privately owned services available out there to help new business owners develop an appropriate mindset, and learn the skills necessary to be successful.

However, an often overlooked dimension of the entrepreneurship challenge is a business owner’s personal life.  Transitioning from a 9 to 5 employed position to self employment will no doubt accompany some life style changes, which can have consequences on family dynamics.  New business owners, especially those starting a business from home, can up their chances of success by educating their loved ones on the challenges involved with starting a business.  Unless their families are on board with their new venture, what was supposed to be the road to salvation may prove disastrous for their personal lives.

Has your family dynamics changed ever since you started a business? I would love to hear your stories, please do share.

Tech Corner: Why I love SocialToo.com

If you are an active Twitter user like me, you probably get numerous emails about people following you.  In an era that most communication is done by email, I am always looking for ways to reduce the number of emails I receive.

Thanks to a Twitter application called SocialToo, I now only get one daily email introducing me to my followers, and get this, letting me know of the people that have stopped following me.

What is also neat about this application is that it gives me the option to automatically unfollow the people that no longer follow me, along with a host of other features that I will not go into.  I'll let you discover them
for yourself.

Here is a snapshot of a daily email I get from Socialtoo.com.  You can see the list of my new followers, and an option to follow them right from my mail box (I did not have any unfollowers today!)

Apparently, there is a trend among some Twitter users to follow you, and as soon you follow them back, they then go ahead and unfollow you.  This is supposed to be a way to keep them on top of the list of people you follow.  Too me, this is a sick game, and totally contrary to the spirit of what Twitter is all about, making connections.  But now, thanks to Social Too, I can catch these culprits in their cycle of following and unfollowing me.

By the way, if you are a Facbook girl, there is something in SocialToo for you and your cluttered mailbox too.

Now that we are on the subject, how about you connect with us on Twitter
