It's almost drill time! As of today more than 6.4 million Californians are registered to participate in the ShakeOut drill at 10:15 a.m. on October 15. Use the interactive map on the ShakeOut home page to see how many are in your area, and review lists of who is participating. Is your local school or district listed? Your city of county? Your organization? Please forward this email to colleagues, friends, family, and others to make sure they are aware of the ShakeOut and know about these resources. With just under a week still to go, many more can still register!
Radio and TV commercials, online advertising, electronic billboards, and other ShakeOut promotion is now happening all over the state. Let us know what you see! People and organizations have created their own posters, banners, emails, activities, and more. Please email info@shakeout.org to describe what you see, and if possible include a photo, or forward any emails you've received. Thank you!
Is your drill a potential ShakeOut Media Venue? If you represent an organization planning a drill on October 15 that will include interesting visuals or activities of potential interest to the news media, please email info@shakeout.org ASAP! Include your current plans for your drill, and describe any media outreach you have done or plan to do. Please include your full contact information so we can contact you. Your event will be listed on the ShakeOut Calendar and included in media advisories.
Resources for your drill or for encouraging others to participate:
- Please download the 2009 "ShakeOut Drill Broadcast" recordings before 10/13. Test them in advance to play during your drill (you may need to connect speakers to your computer for the full effect of the rumbling sounds). The broadcast will also be played on radio stations listed on the website.
- A calendar of events is now at Shakeout.Org/calendar, and more events are being added daily. Use the "contact us" form to describe other events that should be listed.
- Multi-level drill manuals for schools, businesses, non-profits and other organizations, and government agencies have also been added. These and other materials are listed on ShakeOut.org/resources and for each group at ShakeOut.org/howtoparticipate.
- Learn why "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" is recommended.
- Schools should visit the ShakeOut.org/schools page, which has a preparedness survey, drill planning documents and checklists, take-home materials, and educational curricula.
- Visit www.dropcoverholdon.org to play the "Beat the Quake" game and learn how to secure your space!
