Yesterday's headline in the Chicago Tribune read: "Abortions at 30-year low." If you haven't had a chance, I encourage you to read this article.
This is great news for all of us working to decrease the number of lives harmed by abortion. I am very encouraged by the results of this study!
I found it interesting that in this article (and on a Newsweek.com article) both pro-choice and pro-life leaders hailed this report as proof that their strategy is working. Unfortunately, there is no conclusive evidence as to why the rate went down, since that wasn't part of the study.
What motivates me is that working to reduce the number of abortions is a place where we can find common ground. Regardless of political affiliation, most people agree that lowering the abortion rate is a noble cause to be working toward. As we are bringing hope and support to women facing unplanned pregnancies, we are demonstrating the love of God. As Steve Hiller and I discussed on WMBI's "Prime Time Chicago" yesterday, Christians should be known for who we stand for, not just what we stand against.
These new numbers show that one out of every five pregnancies in America end in abortion. While that is better than the past rate of one in four, it also shows there is still a lot of work to be done.
That is why I am so grateful for you. You are making such a difference every time you partner with Caris to provide hope and support to a woman facing an unplanned pregnancy. She is not just a number in the abortion debate. She is a woman facing a decision that will forever alter her own life and the life of her unborn child. That is the importance of this work.
