My name is Jen Vermeulen and I have been involved with Caris as a volunteer for a year. Since volunteering at Caris I have taken on the role of an Administrative Assistant for the Near West location. At 16 years old, Jada and her mother found out that she was pregnant during a visit at Lawndale Christian Health Center. Jada ran out of the exam room and locked herself in the restroom. When her mother also expressed many of her own feelings of anger, the nurse encouraged them both to get counsel on-site with Caris.

In the first few minutes of my counseling session, Jada would not speak. She appeared stunned by the news she just received. After assuring her that I was there for her, she opened up. Some of the first things she shared were about her dreams of finishing high school and going to college.

President's Corner
Dear Ministry Partners,

At Caris, we love the word "pilot," because it gives us a chance to try out ideas that we sense God may be giving us. When we began counseling at Lawndale Christian Health Center (LCHC) in May 2008 we were piloting a new idea to serve more women in Chicago without significantly increasing our costs. Partnering with a trusted organization that had already been serving the community for years, Caris would now have the opportunity to bring hope and support to women considering abortion in this corner of the city. LCHC gave us a room one day a week to meet with clients and we prayed the word would spread about our free services.
The staff at LCHC shared our passion to help serve women and children because they, too, saw the reality that many women are overwhelmed when faced with with an unplanned pregnancy. Medical facilities may not be able to provide counsel to women as they wrestle with the decisions that need to be made for the future. When you read Jada's story, you'll see that this is where Caris comes in.
Like any new project, it took some time for the word to spread about Caris. Through Internet advertising, physician referrals and electronic scheduling at LCHC, we started to see growth. From July 2008-June 2009 we saw an average of 13 women per month at this site. Now, more than one year later, we have added a second day of counseling services based on demand. In September alone, 31 women received help from Caris at LCHC!
This partnership is all about connection. After receiving a pregnancy test and counseling with Caris, a woman has access to LCHC's full scope of ongoing patient care. From prenatal resources to baby items, a woman has the practical resources and support needed to continue her pregnancy with greater confidence.
We thank God for what HE is doing in this partnership. And we hope you are inspired to continue praying with us that God will open doors in communities where women have the greatest need for our free services.
