TOP 5… Tips for making a great start

Got that nervous, back-to-school feeling? Here are our team's top tips for getting your year off to a great start:

(1) Bet on your students' success:
Setting high expectations of your students at the start of term will pay dividends, so let your students know you really believe in them and their ability to achieve outstanding results. Talk about their investment options - the longer they commit for, and the more unlikely the bet, the greater the rates of return.

(2) Make it relevant
If your students can see the point of science or history, they are much more likely to make the effort. Can you help by connecting the subject to your students' lives and the range of opportunities that it could open up for them?

(3) Set the Scene
Changing your classroom into a 'boardroom' or splitting it into teams will change the tone and get your students' attention. It has the added bonus of keeping them on their toes!

(4) Play by the rules
It's obvious, but it's so important - follow your school's behaviour policy consistently from day one. Even better though, if you can show why it matters.

(5) Know your own goals
What do you want to get out of the year? You might want to start something new, change the uptake of your subject, or just get the students better grades. Don't shy away from the softer stuff though - think about the skills you want your students to leave with too.
