Barcus-Berry
Artist Q&A
with Ndugu Chancler, Drummer, Composer & Producer
"Along with the great use of the Barcus-Berry 1457 Piezo Transducers on guitars, these transducers also work great on vibes and other percussion instruments as pickups that eliminate feedback. They sound great!"

Q: How long have you been using the Barcus-Berry 1457 “Outsider” Piezo
Transducer?

NDUGU: I started using the 1457 in late August of 2009.

Q: Why did you choose to try and  the  1457 “Outsider” Piezo Transducer? NDUGU: I had been familiar with the 1457 for quite a while, but was afraid that the application would not be suitable for vibes since I knew of no one using it for such. After some research, I found that it would work on the vibes very well!

Q: Do you use the use the 1457 “Outsider” Piezo Transducer when you’re in the studio or during live performances?
NDUGU: I mainly use the vibes live, but I have also recorded in the studio with it.

Q:  Do you have any specific memories associated with the 1457?
NDUGU: One advantage of the 1457 is that it mounts very clean on the surface and works great without any adjustments. I received the 1457 just before a concert and put it on and away I went. I immediately noticed a better quality of sound on the vibes!

Q: How does the performance and sound of the 1457 compare to traditional methods of micing your vibes?

NDUGU: The sound on the vibes is clean and without static noise from closely related surfaces.

Q: What kind of sound do you need from a vibes when you are playing live? How does the 1457 “Outsider” Piezo Transducer help you achieve this? NDUGU: When playing live on vibes I need to be able to amplify my instrument to cut through the other electronic instruments on stage. The sound should still retain its' acoustic timbre. The 1457 makes it easy to get the sound I am looking for.

About Barcus-Berry
Tradition of Innovation
Over four decades of innovative leadership are deeply engrained in the history of Barcus-Berry. In 1963, experiments initiated by violinist John Berry and electronics visionary Les Barcus, gave birth to the first ever piezo crystal transducer for musical instruments.

This discovery ultimately led to Barcus-Berry's introduction of several "firsts" in the music industry, such as the first electric violin, the first successful piezo transducers for guitar, piano and concert harp, the first commercially marketed active direct box, the first combination strap button/output jack and the first "under saddle" piezo pickup.

Barcus-Berry has come to offer the best quality in acoustic-electric violins and transducers and preamps for guitars, brass and woodwind instruments, orchestral instruments, pianos and harps. Barcus-Berry products are favored by leading performers such as Jean Jeansonne (Rascal Flatts), Savion Glover (Grammy Award-winning dancer), Brendon Anthony (The Pat Green Band), Downs Thompson (Clay Walker Band), Dan Kelly (Alan Jackson and Faith Hill), David Pichette (Emerson Drive), Terry Hale (George Strait), Ronnie MilsapAndy Garcia (Cinesone All Stars), Tracy Bonham and Daniel Willem.

Today, Barcus-Berry borrows from its illustrious heritage to bring the newest generation of products which allow musicians freedom of expression through true acoustic sound.
