A Legacy of Hope Many people in West Africa cling to hope in fetishes or expect their local witchdoctor to save them, help them or heal their deepest needs. Others depend on the ways of their local religious beliefs to carry them through dark times. But despite adherence to rituals and spiritual tradition, fear permeates much of their lives. Reaching across barriers of darkness, fear and hopelessness, TWR is engaging people of West Africa with breakthrough radio programs that bring peace to a potential audience of more than 190 million. Relevant, culturally sensitive programs offer hope to the seeker, encouragement to the new believer and training for the seasoned Christian. Read more about our ministry that is reaching beyond barriers. You can read an excerpt from Flora Rittenhouse’s new book, Reaching Beyond Barriers, and an informative Q & A with the author herself. New Resource Available to Enhance Awareness in World Missions TWR has published a new missions resource, a book titled Reaching Beyond Barriers – A Legacy of Hope, which challenges people with the reality of the spiritual battle being fought on the front line of missions. Written by long-time TWR missionary Flora Rittenhouse, the book debuted on October 1, 2009. Reaching Beyond Barriers takes readers on a missionary journey through a spiritually needy part of Africa beginning in 1954 up to the present day. Closed doors, tragedy and numerous confrontations with the schemes of Satan are a few of the barriers encountered by African Christians as well as TWR and SIM missionaries determined to see the gospel reach the people of West Africa through radio. Mission is Possible Mission will have its own timeslot at CrossChannel.de, the young Web radio of ERF Medien (Wetzlar), a TWR partner. A new program called “Mission Is Possible” began airing on October 1, 2009. This program will present exciting stories about mission work throughout the world weekly. In co-operation with TWR, the editorial office will present multiple options how to get involved personally – for example with internships or other projects around the globe. On the same day, the weekly series called “International” will start with reports about Christians around the world. Radios for the Roma in Bulgaria Endeavoring to provide solar-powered portable radios to the Roma (historically mislabeled as gypsy) people in Bulgaria, TWR has confirmed that a shipment of 150 Galcom units have arrived and will be distributed in the coming months. “All the boxes of radios are in good condition, and nothing is missing,” says TWR’s on-the-ground staff member in Southeastern Europe. Since 1995, Galcom International has been partnering with TWR in the distribution of solar powered, fix-tuned radios, locked on to TWR broadcasts around the world. Over 3,000 radios have been distributed by TWR staff to unreached people groups in India, Mozambique, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia Montenegro, not to mention the tens of thousands of other radios fix-tuned to TWR signals provided by Galcom and distributed by other missionaries and pastors. With an estimated 10 people listening to each radio, together Galcom and TWR are reaching millions daily with the gospel of Jesus Christ. In 2009, Galcom is excited about their partnership with TWR in their “Year of the Roma” initiative, with plans to distribute over 3,000 solar powered, fix-tuned radios to the Roma people spread throughout Eastern Europe. “We know that the message of Jesus Christ has the power to change lives, to bring peace and hope, to heal families and empower believers,” says Galcom’s Tim Whitehead. “Please pray that these little ‘portable missionaries’ would have a great impact on the Roma and everywhere they serve all over the world.” You can give the gift of TWR's messages of Christ's unconditional love and sacrifice to an entire Roma family by purchasing a radio for them for $38.
