Rotary Club of Evansville

We Need You!
There are several opportunities to get involved this fall. Immediately, we have these requests for volunteers:
1) Junior Achievement of Southwestern Indiana needs volunteers for it's 8th annual job shadow event. The event will take place Friday, February 19, 2010 and will run from approximately 8:15am to noon. Please contact Theo Boots for more information.
2) 2010 WNIN Action Auction is looking for people to volunteer to be in the Evansville Solicitation group.  With this job, you will receive a list of previous, or potential, donors to contact.  WNIN will give you the information you need concerning the auction and what the donor may have donated in the past (if they are a past donor).  This is a great opportunity to get involved to help WNIN. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Ashley Murray (Auction Manager) at (Phone  812-423-2973 Ext. 136) or Ryan Beal.

Year End Giving
As we approach year end, many look to those organizations they believe in to make charitable gifts.  Please consider the Rotary Foundation of Evansville in your year-end gifting plans! There are several ways to contribute: First, in celebration of our 100th birthday as a Rotary Club, Rotarians that pledge $2,500 over the next 5 years (to be completed by 12/31/2013) become members of the Rotary Club of Evansville Centennial Society.  Second, you may become a member of the Rotary Foundation of Evansville, Inc.’s Legacy League by including the Rotary Foundation of Evansville, Inc. in your estate planning. Third, make an annual contribution to the Rotary Foundation of Evansville, Inc. through your dues statement, year-end giving or other giving throughout the year.  During the 2008-2009 year, 227 Rotarians contributed a total of $37,415 to the Rotary Foundation of Evansville, Inc.! To make a contribution, please mail a check made payable to the Rotary Foundation of Evansville, Inc. to:  402 Court Street, PO Box 1131, Evansville, IN  47706.  If your contribution will apply toward a Centennial Society gift, please note that in the NOTE section of your check.

Holiday Luncheon
Thank you Keith Gambill and Jana Kastle, co-chairs of the Holiday Luncheon, and all those who assisted including the official photographer Paul Crimm Jr., for a superb event. The gifts and donations went to the Marine’s Toys For Tots and the money normally spent for table gifts went to Holly’s House.

New Member Proposals
The following two persons are being proposed for membership into Rotary. Beth Clark, Vice President, Ohio Valley Financial, is being proposed for membership by Donna Leader. Beth’s classification would be Commercial Banking. And, Tracy Gorman, President/CEO, Evansville Rescue Mission, is being proposed by Judy Rueger. Tracy’s classification would be Social Service. Any one objecting to the proposal(s) should contact the Membership committee.

Condolences
Sincerest sympathy is extended to Cathy Sickman Renner and family on the December 6th death of her mother Emily Fowler. Mrs. Fowler had a massive heart attack recently and suffered complications from open heart surgery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rotary Foundation of Evansville. Also, the Morning Rotary Club suffered a loss with the death of Rotarian Jack Marr.

Thoughts and Prayers
Please continue to keep all Rotarians and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Ruthie Shekell’s mother is still very ill and could use your warm thoughts and prayers.

Yucatan Project
Information from John Whinrey
YUCATAN UPDATE:
Dornier MedTech America of Kennesaw, Georgia is donating to our Rotary Foundation of Evansville a holmium laser to treat kidney stones, for use in the Yucatan. Our problem is that the holmium laser is 4'10" tall on a pallet, and is located in Kennesaw, Georgia, a little north of Atlanta. Is there anyone in the Rotary Club who would be willing to make available to us a cargo (box-type) van? Better yet, is there anyone who is going to be traveling to and returning from the Atlanta area in a cargo van in the near future? Please contact John Whinrey (425-4687 x302) or Ron Huffman (490-8255) if you can help.

And, from Jan Meeks “Andy and Mike Clayton, owners of Clayton’s Commercial Laundry, donated 3 commercial dryers for the project.”  Thank you for all your support!

Monetary Donations Needed!
600 POLIO CASES FIRST SIX MONTHS OF 2009  A total of 600 polio cases have been reported for the first six months of 2009 compared to 1652 cases for all of 2008.  The four endemic countries are Nigeria (321 cases), India (89), Pakistan (20), and Afghanistan (10).The numbers are going down, but much work needs to be done before polio is eradicated.  Human ignorance continues to be a very formidable foe. The Rotary clubs in the United States have raised 90 million dollars out of a goal of 200 million.  If you wish to contribute to this ambitious and noble effort to eradicate polio please make out a check to "The Rotary Foundation" and mark "Polio" in the lower left hand corner and mail to the Rotary office.

Centennial Society
In celebration of our 100th birthday as a Rotary Club, we are encouraging Rotarians to pledge at least $500 per year to the Rotary Foundation of Evansville, Inc., for each of the next five years. This represents a $2500 commitment over five years to our local foundation. Second, consider becoming a member of the Rotary Foundation of Evansville, Inc.’s Legacy League. The Legacy League is comprised of individuals who have included the Rotary Foundation of Evansville, Inc. in their estate planning. Third, contribute annually to the Rotary Foundation of Evansville, Inc. In 2008 half of our members contributed to this fund. We encourage all of our members to financially support our local foundation so that we might continue to increase the impact that our Club makes through service in our community.
