Mansour Mohamed Yousef Nadhari MD reveals how Dubai, as a diverse emirate, has risen to challenges

Education and prevention top of the bill

The United Arab Emirates can be described as a bridge country between the East and West. This is uniquely apparent in the Emirate of Dubai in many aspects of social welfare and, particularly, in regard to its approach to public health and the provision of medical care. As a multicultural, diverse emirate, it has risen to the challenges of modern planning for the provision of state-of-the-art health care for the growing population.

At the opening ceremony of NWAC Dubai 2010, Dr. Mansour Mohamed Yousef Nadhari addressed the assembly to welcome the delegates on behalf of His Excellency, Qadhi Saeed al Murooshid. Afterward, he took the time to be interviewed to describe the structure of public health care in Dubai and his role as Head of the Anesthesia Depar tment of Rashid Hospital, Trauma Center.

Exciting findings from Japan

The first time that you meet poster contenders Yoshiko Onodera, Tomoki Sasakawa, Shigeaki Otomo, Osamu Takahata and Hiroshi Iwasaki from Japan you think they might be too young to be here. Don’t let that fool you! They are a serious group that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with any of their fellow poster competitors this week at NWAC Dubai 2010. They have presented a thorough analysis of records that reveals an effective method of using ultrasound guided nerve blockades to help some very seriously ill patients.

When they say very ill patients, they mean very ill patients. This study looked at patients with ar teriosclerosis obliterans (ASO). As you know, ASO patients can have extreme complications such as ischemic heart disease or even chronic hear t failure. This means that general anesthesia is not going to be easy or even possible. Neuraxial blockades Dr Marije Rykers and Dr. BJ Lombaers tell Michael McTigue why they are thrilled to be here are also contraindicated due to the anticoagulation therapy typical for this type of patient. In short, these are desperately sick people with few alternatives. They knew that ultrasound guided peripheral nerve blocks (PNBs) have been used in various fields with few side effects. Therefore, they decided to compare the effect of PNB and general anesthesia on hemodynamic changes and postoperative analgesia in the debridement of necrotic tissue in ASO patients.

Dr. Yoshiko Onodera and her team are serious poster contenders this week

Educational and enjoyable

We had the great for tune of spending a few moments with Dr. Marije Rykers and Dr. BJ Lombaers of The Netherlands to find out why they decided to come to NWAC Dubai 2010.

Dr. Rykers is thrilled to be here. As a newly accredited doctor she really appreciates the workshops provided here. "The instruction and the ability to really find out what a procedure feels like is very important to me," she said. "It’s not an opportunity I usually have available to me."

She says location has also been an asset as well, remarking: "There is a lot more to do here than I expected, it's been great."

European Society with a mission

The European Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy (ESRA) was founded in 1980 in Belgium. Since its inception, the ESRA has grown to a membership of over 2,400 professionals throughout Europe and internationally. The goals and objectives of the society include the following: to participate in and influence the development of specialization criteria in regional anaesthesia, including training and practice standards; the development of a certification program for its members; to collect and disseminate current knowledge of research results and best practices in regional anaesthesia; to provide opportunities for learning through publications, teaching programs, and the furtherance of inclusion of regional anaesthesia in all anaesthesiology training programs; and to collaborate and share information and results with other professional societies.

Florian Locatelli has been on hand to educate visitors of NWAC Dubai 2010 about ESRA

Inspiring the industry

Would you like to meet a busy, unique and popular man? Yes? Then join us while we talk with Dr. Ammar Salti. Dr. Salti is one of the Co-Chairs of NWAC Dubai 2010. This job required 15 months of preparation and would be enough to qualify him as busier than normal. Now add in his teaching schedule this week running an Intensive Ultrasound Workshop and a Master Class in Regional Anesthesia and you have someone that has a long to-do list.

Those duties would be more than enough for most of us, but Dr. Salti does all of this while performing his normal duties as a consultant, anesthesiologist and pain specialist at Zayed Military Hospital in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Zayed Military Hospital is a ter tiary 350-bed hospital providing treatment for the military, their families and also for civilians coming in through private practice. Approximately 5,000 procedures a year are performed there with about 45% of those procedures being some form of regional anesthesia. They use regional anesthesia in trauma cases, surgery, or thopedic procedures, pediatric care and more. Regional anesthesia is very impor tant to Dr. Salti, the hospital and his patients because it deals with pain whether that be perioperatively or postoperatively. The proper use of regional anesthesiology to help patients through their procedures and recoveries with minimal pain leads to better outcomes.
