CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR ALL-STATE MUSICIANS

How does one get to Symphony Hall? Practice, practice and practice some more! Congratulations to the IHS musicians who successfully auditioned for the Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA) All-State Music Festival. Seven of our students earned the honor of being named a "Symphony Hall Scholar." They will spend three days in Boston rehearsing with other talented students from high schools across the state. The festival will culminate in a concert at Boston's Symphony Hall on March 20th. Congratulations to:

VALENTINE'S DAY IS ALMOST HERE!
Buy your fudge from The Company of IHS!
What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than with a delicious heart-shaped box of Winfrey's fudge?

Valentine HeartThe members of The Company of IHS, the high school drama club, need your support. They are selling the fudge for $7 per 12-ounce box -- less than the retail value thanks to the generosity of Winfrey's. These boxes make the perfect gift for your valentine. Don't forget the grandparents, teachers, babysitters, and more! The fudge can be purchased from any member of The Company, at Pirates of Penzance performances this weekend, at the post office and YMCA on February 13, or by contacting Debra Dion Faust, Drama Advisor.

February 5, 6 & 7 -- Pirates of Penzance
The Ipswich Middle School produces the Gilbert & Sullivan classic as its annual musical.

February 23 -- Chinese Exchange Students Perform
The Ipswich Middle School is hosting a group of Chinese students, and their teachers, in a cultural exchange. Last year the school sent a group of middle school students and high school Jazz Band members to China. This year the Chinese visit us. During their stay the Chinese students will perform along with the IHS and IMS Jazz bands. The community is welcome! Admission is free but please bring some Chinese take-out food. After the performance, a meet-and-greet & Chinese pot-luck dinner will be served in the cafeteria.

February 27 -- High School Drama Festival


Ipswich High School hosts the Massachusetts High School Drama Guild Preliminary Competition Festival. The Company of IHS presents its competition one-act play, His Black Door, along with seven other one-acts from area high schools.

When: 8:45 am to 6:15 pm. Shows begin at 9:00 am and run throughout the day.
Admission fee: $10 at-the-door admits you to any or all plays.

Here's what is coming up. March begins the spring concert series with the annual Ipswich String Festival!

Bar of Musical Notes

March 3 -- Ipswich String Festival
String students in grades 4 through 12 get together to play this annual concert showcasing the wonderful spectrum of learners from beginner to advanced.

When: 7:00 pm

March 6 -- Ipswich Musical Roots Concert
Sponsored by the Ipswich Middle School, this annual concert features Ipswich musical performers including Orville Giddings, Brooks McPhail, Miranda Russell, Judy C., Greenheads, Seth Gooby, Ray Morley, Eric Colville, and the Ipswich All-Stars Band.

When: 7:00 pm
Admission fee: $15 advance; $20 at-the-door; $45/family of 4+

March 16 -- Middle School Chamber Music Concert
Ipswich Middle School string quartets and chamber wind ensembles perform.

All events are free of charge unless noted. The IPAC, Ipswich Performing Arts Center, is located in the Ipswich Middle/High School complex at 134 High Street, Ipswich, MA. 




IMADA WINS 2010 MMEA MUSIC ADVOCACY AWARD
IMADA is the proud recipient of the Massachusetts Music Educators Association 2010 Music Advocacy Award! The formal presentation will be held on Friday, March 19 at the annual MMEA Conference. The award is given annually to "outstanding individuals, organizations, or community leaders who have demonstrated advocacy for music education in the schools of Massachusetts...who qualify under the following criteria:
1. Is active as an advocate for music education in the school or community
2. Shows strong leadership in the community and good rapport with teachers, parents, students, and administrators
3. Candidate’s efforts have led to a financial commitment for music education by the school system and community
4. Candidate’s efforts have led to improvements in curriculum, budget, or enrollment in the music program."


All of the IMADA officers and members are to be commended for their part in raising awareness among the Ipswich community as to the importance of arts education. We thank the Middle and High School parents, community members and businesses for their financial contributions and support for the 4th grade music program at the override ballot box. We also thank our arts faculty for doing the tremendous job they do every day!

Camelot Discs are Ready
If you ordered the DVD and Photo/Slide Show disks of the Company of IHS's fall production, Camelot, your discs are ready. You should have received an email notifying you to pick them up in the Fine Arts office. They are on the center credenza in envelopes with your name, or your student's name, on it. If you missed the opportunity to order the disks, you can complete this order form. Discs are sold only to cast members and their families for historical purposes. The package costs $10 of which $4 covers our cost and $6 is a donation to IMADA. You will receive the DVD, hundreds of photos for you to print, and a photo slide-show with music by the IHS Camelot  pit orchestra.





Call to Artists
IMADA's annual Art for the Arts show and silent auction, renamed Robin's Arts for the Arts,  will  honor the memory of its founder - Robin Silverman. Remembering the "community visionary" that Robin was, our theme this year is Community Visions. To make this event successful, we need your art! The silent auction, music and reception will be held Saturday, April 10 at the First Church of Ipswich. All community artists are invited to submit their work. You will receive 40% commission. For more information go to 'Learn More' or email our chairperson, Steve Veiga.

OUR MISSION

Ipswich Music, Art & Drama Association, Inc. (IMADA) is a volunteer charitable organization that partners with the Ipswich, Massachusetts public Middle and High Schools to support and promote fine arts education and appreciation.
 
IMADA's mission is to:
  • advocate for the fine arts as an integral part of secondary education
  • enhance performing and visual arts educational experiences
  • help ensure that all students have access to the highest quality arts education
 OUR RECENT GIFTS

IMADA presented gifts totaling $7,444.94 to the Ipswich Public Schools Department of Fine Arts at the School Committee meeting on January 21, 2010. These gifts were funded by your donations, our fund raising activities, and two grants awarded to IMADA.

The gifts include:
- iMac Computer with film editing & electronic music software to be used jointly by the IHS film and electronic music classes (Funded by a grant to IMADA from New England BioLabs)
- Conductor-in-Residence Program (funded in part by a grant to IMADA from the Ipswich Cultural Council)
- Yamaha Keyboard, stand & bench for music practice room
- Rolling computer desk for iMac
- Nine Canon Powershot & one Canon EOS Rebel SX Camera Kits for high school digital photography classes
- Seven tripods for IHS digital photography classes
- Two Canon Powershot Camera Kits for IMS Art Club
- Two sewing machines for IHS Drama Department
- Miscellaneous art supplies for IHS Art Club


How Can I Help

Volunteer
Many volunteers are needed for the upcoming all-day high school drama festival and Robin's Art for the Arts. IMADA also needs help re-designing and maintaining our website imadaonline.org.

IMADA thanks all the donors to its FY10 Annual Fund Drive. In addition, thank you to the many individuals and organizations who have made donations in memory of Robin Silverman. A scholarship in her name has been established. If you would like to remember Robin, see 'Learn More' and note "In Memory of Robin Silverman" on your check. We'll keep you posted on how IMADA will use the funds in this newsletter. All donations directly benefit the students of Ipswich as IMADA is an all-volunteer organization.
