ROCK 'N ROLL PARTY
AT THE WAO!

On March 27, 2010, we held a wonderful Open House Event at the WAO.  We could not have asked for a better day; the weather was beautiful and the animals were excited with all the activity. Hundreds of people showed up and supported the animals and browsed for “hidden” treasures at our rummage sale!

During the Special Event, guests were treated to the Rock 'n Roll sounds of the 60s, 70s, and 80s.   KONO 101.1's Steven Sellers hosted the lunch-time Rock 'n Roll Party, and everyone had a great time at the KONO Party Tent enjoying free hot dogs and winning prizes from the spinning prize wheel!

If you could not attend this event, we hope you will come out and visit us soon as your donations support our beautiful animals. If you are unable to visit us, we hope you will consider making a kind donation towards our animals' care.

The Open House Event would not have been possible without the support and hard work contributed by the following organizations:

B&J Lawn Care:  Provided mulch for our big cats’ enclosures for free. The animals absolutely loved the natural mulch placed in their enclosures. Thank you so much, B&J!

Juvenile Probation:  A special “roar” goes out to the following Community Service Restitution supervisors who supervised the huge 2-month mulching project for our big cats and prepared the grounds for our Open House Event:

Joe Medellin
Romeo Bononcini
Marquis Fleming
Lisa Guerrero
Arturo Gutierrez
Steven Lerma
Marisol Quinones
Andrew Ramos

Thank you very much to all the large groups of juveniles who worked very hard on both projects--they did a fabulous job!

Earl Warren High School High School Students:  They worked very hard raising money for our animals at the Open House Event by working a fundraising booth and providing face painting services to the children wanting to look like an exotic tiger or lion. We love their spirit, enthusiasm, and desire to help our animals!  Thank you so much!

Best Buy Volunteers:  We want to thank the Best Buy Volunteers for coming out to help provide us with backup support for our tour guides! We had so many people on tour that it was necessary to have volunteers stationed throughout the trail to ensure the safety of our animals and to answer general questions posed by our visitors. Two paws up for their invaluable service!

And last, but not least, the WAO would also like to thank Kaitlin for helping us clean up after the event. Hosting this Special Event was truly a team effort!

WE NEED YOUR HELP TODAY!

The slowdown in the economy has hurt everyone, especially our animals. Funding has dropped significantly, putting our organization on pins and needles wondering what happen next. We are facing a very difficult financial situation right now and for the first time we are appealing to the public, asking for assistance to help us save the Orphanage so we can continue to provide the animals with the love, care, and support they need. Donations are vital and necessary to help the WAO continue its effort to save the lives of hundreds of exotic wild and domestic animals.

Animal care at the WAO is very expensive -- it costs a minimum of $15,000 per month to feed our big cats and $2,250 per month to feed our primates and bears.  Plus we require funds for veterinarian services and animal care staff.  If you have ever considered making a donation towards our animals' care, now would be the time to do so.

The WAO is not funded by Federal, State or Local government entities. We need your help to save the animals so we can continue to provide support for the animals that simply had no other place to live out their lives in safety and comfort.  No donation is too small – every dollar counts toward our animals’ care. To make a donation please click here to donate by check or money order (and receive a t-shirt for any donation of $25 or more) or click here if you want to donate using pay-pal. Thank you very much for your support during our time of need.

IT’S FIESTA TIME!

We invite you to celebrate Fiesta at the Wild Animal Orphanage, on Saturday, April 24th at 12:00pm.   Come out and enjoy a special priced Fiesta tour and be a part of the excitement.  Watch our tigers leap in the air for joy, our monkeys squeal with glee, and our lions roar their approval for their brightly colored enrichment toys and treats! For special admission prices, please click here.  Not sure where we are located in San Antonio?  Please click here for directions!

If you want to double the fiesta fun, we are accepting gently used or new enrichment toys for the animals. Click here for a list of requested donated items. Donated items will be given to our animals during the Fiesta tour, so you will see your contribution to the animals’ welfare in action! So remember to make tracks to the Wild Animal Orphanage on April 24, 2010, and share a little Fiesta fun with our animals!  Viva la Fiesta!

MEET BUBBA, OUR WHITE TIGER!

On April 4, 2005, the WAO accepted Bubba and Sebastian (Serval) from the Wildlife Preserve, a small non-profit facility in Odessa, Florida.  The founder passed away in July 2004 and the property was sold, leaving many animals displaced, including Bubba.

Like many white tigers, Bubba is the result of in-breeding and cross-breeding.  Unfortunately, in-breeding results in serious defects such as cleft palates,  scoliosis (curvature of the spine), and prone to having crossed eyes. Often white tigers are not as quick and smart as their orange counterparts which are probably why trainers prefer to use these animals for entertainment purposes.

Bubba is approximately 11 years old and he is both mentally and physically slow. Bubba is a very gentle animal and does not display the same aggressive traits as our other tigers. Bubba was born with very narrow hips resulting in a degenerative hip disorder which causes him to walk very slowly with one foot placed in front of the other instead of side-by-side.

Even though Bubba receives a large meal each day, along with his added vitamins, minerals, and medications, Bubba has difficulty putting on weight.

He was tested for hyperthyroid and both tests came out negative. So Bubba traveled to Texas A&M Veterinarian School where we discovered Bubba may have acute pancreatitis, a disorder in the amount of enzymes produced by the pancreas.

Bubba, along with several of our animals, require special attention and this in turn requires additional funds.

Won’t you consider making a generous donation today so we can continue to provide animals, like Bubba, a safe and secure place to live out their lives?  Click here to make a kind donation towards our animals' care.  Thank you so very much!

DOMESTIC CATS LOOKING FOR A FOREVER LOVING HOME!

Over the last several years, the Wild Animal Orphanage has accepted domestic animals needing a home.  We simply could not turn our backs on these animals, and we hope you can help us find forever loving homes for these special animal companions.  All animals adopted from the WAO are neutered or spayed and have received their first set of vaccinations.

During our Special Open House, Jumper, one of our special kitties, found a forever home with Jennifer.  Thank you Jennifer for adopting and providing Jumper a loving forever home!

Please contact us at 210.688.9038 for information on how you can give the gift of love to one of these special animals!  You can see some of our cats up for adoption on our website at
