Love Is In The Air
Won’t you be our animals’ Valentine? We invite you to celebrate Valentine’s Day at the Wild Animal Orphanage, on Sunday, February 14th at 12:00pm.   Come out and enjoy a special priced Valentine’s tour and be a part of the excitement.  Watch our tigers leap in the air for joy, our monkeys squeal with glee, and our lions roar their approval for their Valentine enrichment toys and treats!

If you want to double the love, we are accepting gently used or new enrichment toys for the animals.  Click on the two bears for a list of requested donated items. Donated items will be given to our animals on Valentine’s Day, so you will see your contribution to the animals’ welfare in action! So remember to make tracks to the Wild Animal Orphanage on Valentine’s Day and share a little love with our animals!

WAO Rock 'n Roll Party!
On March 27, 2010, the WAO will host a rock ‘n roll party! Join KONO 101.1 at the Rock’n Party Tent, as guests and animals rock to the music of the 60’s, 70’s and 80s, enjoy treats and drinks, and spin the Spinning Wheel for a chance to win prizes! All tours will be only $2 per person for both adults and children. We will also host the WAO Rummage Sale and Auction throughout the day, where the proceeds will benefit the WAO animals. So mark this day on your calendar and remember to tell your friends and family about this very special event for the entire family!

If you are interested in donating items for the WAO Rummage Sale and Auction, please call us at 210-688-9038 so we can arrange pick-up of your items!  Our animals thank you for your generosity!

Meet our Lemurs!

When you think of the WAO, you probably think of our lions, tigers, and bears (oh my!), but we also have some of the most amazing smaller animals that call the WAO home. This month’s newsletter honors our little lemurs for their unique personality and humorous antics.

If you have watched the movies Madagascar (2005) or Madagascar:  Escape 2 Africa (2008), then you probably fell in love with the playfulness of the lemurs featured in both movies.  Lemurs are small primates known as "prosimians," which, roughly translated, means "pre-primates" or "before monkeys."   Lemurs are only native to the island of Madagascar and its neighboring island.  Interesting to note, the lemurs resemble the oldest ancestors of primates which lived tens of millions of years ago!

The WAO ring-tailed lemurs like to live in groups and are considered to be diurnal, which means they are awake during the day and asleep at night.   Unlike our capuchin monkeys, lemurs do not have prehensile tails (they cannot hang by their tails from trees like monkeys) but our little lemurs do have long wet noses and a keen sense of smell.   Their thumbs and big toes are opposable, but they mainly use their teeth and an extended "toilet claw" on the second toe of their hind feet for grooming.   And our little Jay-Jay does like to groom himself daily for the ladies!

Lemur females are dominant, which means our lemur ladies like to remind Jay-Jay whose boss from time to time!  A group of lemurs usually has one dominant female who leads the group, controls their movement, and has first choice of food. Our lemurs' diet  includes fruits, vegetables, and other edible plant materials.  Insects may also be on the menu, if the lemurs are  fast enough to catch little butterflies.  We hope you can come out and meet Jay-Jay and the ladies in person soon!  For tour details click here!

WAO Seeking Corporate Sponsors!

Why should your corporation sponsor the WAO?  Well, there are all sorts of ways in which your company could benefit from a partnership with the WAO.  Linking with a charity has a positive effect on brand values and consumer behavior as well as being an ideal way to show your care for animals. The WAO provides permanent sanctuary for over 500+ animals and so we do need your support to ensure our work continues.

The Wild Animal Orphanage spends an average of $30,000 per month on vet and feed bills and relies on the generosity of its corporate sponsors and supporters; we sincerely hope your company would consider committing to our future. By offering corporate sponsorship to the WAO, not only can you take an interest in the welfare of animals but your company participation will also be proudly displayed.   If you are interested in becoming a corporate sponsor, please call us at 210.688.9038!  Thank you on behalf of our animals!
