Listen to the Facts, Not You’re Gut

I read this week about the success of the iPhone, and how the Apple iPhone has doubled its worldwide market share of smartphone sales. The iPhone has been an incredible success and the iPhone 4 is soon to be released within Australia. Accordingly we could think that the iPhone is ubiquitous. It feels like that it is the most common phone in the marketplace but they are not, or not yet.  iPhone penetration is an easy thing to ascertain, so why would it be such a blind spot. If we were making a decision in our business and we had the perception of reality on something that is very easily determined, then we would not be making a very smart decision.

On a worldwide basis the iPhone is 14.4% of the smartphone sales, which are about 25% of the total phone sales. So on a worldwide basis the iPhone is probably only about 2 to 3% of total phones sold. In America and Canada the percentage of iPhones is significantly higher but it is still no more than 10% of the total phones sold. I don't believe that in gaining an appreciation for a lot of facts that we don't look beyond our own experience. We limit our thinking to what is happening in our world, and believe that that is the case in a broader context. The implication is that we have to work extra hard to understand our customers and understand truly what is going on in our business.

We need to be careful to look beyond what is happening directly in our life. We need to work hard to get a feel for what our customers really like. Listen to them every opportunity you get.

Focal Point

This week I was meeting with a thought leader who has some well-developed thought leadership in the area of learning and its application to the business world. While working with this person it impressed upon me the need to understand the value of our knowledge.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s an infopreneur or an entrepreneur, we all have expertise within ourselves or our business. We need to understand the commercial value of our knowledge and be able to express that clearly and articulately for our target market. It is only with this knowledge of the commercial application of our intellectual property that will be able to get the greatest reward and our market to understand our service.
