Dear <<First Name>> Informed decision making is not just about getting a lot of data. It is a way of thinking. It is necessary to have an attitude of wisdom. Plato defined wisdom as “knowing what you know and what you do not know.” This is somewhere between arrogance and insecurity. Being willing to act on what you know whilst doubting that very knowledge so that you can learn while you act. It is being committed to informed decisions and actions. Only through a definite commitment to this way of thinking will we make better decisions. No brag, just facts. There are 5 universities in Australia who say they are in the top 3. How many businesses claim they are the leader in a particular area? We need to be committed to hearing and telling the truth. A lie takes two people, the person telling it and the person who signals in a thousand different ways they want to hear it. Jack Nicholson in a Few Good Men, is on the witness stand being examined by Tom Cruise – and he says "You can't handle the truth!" We want to be told how charming we are, how well we are running our organisations we want to be told how effective we are – we don’t want the truth. Lastly we must adopt an experimenting mindset. In many organisations they have an idea and they want to do it everywhere, or they want to do it nowhere, as opposed to lets try it out. With this way of thinking we will be willing to look at the data, information and evidence to make informed decisions.

Focal Point Last week I told you about the iPad which I acquired. It is fantastic. The iPhone and the iPad have created a revolution in the apps that are being built for the devices. The app concept has now been extended to the Google Android and even Blackberry. So should a business have an app? Domino’s pizza app has led to a significant revenue impact. It seems that having an app is like having a website a few years ago. What are your thoughts? |
