Thought Leadership

Thought leadership is fast becoming the 21st Century’s business imperative for companies, organisations and individuals alike. There is now so much more to business and government than just providing goods and services. Industries are evolving at such a rapid rate that just keeping up with the trends is not good enough; as consumers we are more intelligent and discernible than ever before. To ensure success in any field of endeavour it is critical to be at the forefront of expertise, innovation and professionalism.

Thought Leadership is a subject with unique insights or perspectives which offers them to shift or contribute to the future direction of an industry, community or way of thinking. 

In so many ways the world has shifted dramatically in the last 36 months. Industries have seen major shifts. The shifts may be more offshore to places like Mumbai and Bangalore, or the shifts may be less geographic and more technological, e.g. music publishing. 

It use to be that information was held in the hands of a few. Now in no small part to the World Wide Web and specific applications like Google we have information in the hands of the many. There are over 2.7 billion searches performed on Google each month. The number of text messages sent and received every day exceeds the total population of the planet. There are more than 3,000 new books published every day. 

Information is now like a rolling ocean with ever expanding shores.  As a result expertise as we use to know it is dead. Thought Leadership is the opportunity to set yourself or your business apart. Rather than just having a booth at a trade show, if your business is the one which is asked to give a demonstration or speak on a topic area, then it is the business that will rise above the others. 

So my exhortation to you is to go out and be the thought leader in your industry.

The answers are hidden in the data. There are said to be 15 petabytes (a petabyte is a 1,000,000 gigabytes) of data being created every day – that is 8 times the entire libraries of the United States. We need to take this flood of data and identify the patterns to foster innovation.
