Welcome to Shanghai!
Better Hearing for All
The 3rd Shanghai International Otology & Audiology Conference in connection with the 11th Hearing International Annual Meeting will be held the 21st-24th of October in Shanghai, China. The meetings are co-organized by Ear Institute of Shanghai, Jiaotong University, and Hearing International China. The conference will offer an academic platform in which all participants may share experiences and update their knowledge in Otology and Audiology. We are honored to have distinguished experts from many countries providing lectures, round table discussions, and free papers. Post-Conference presentations focused on highlight topics, such as updated technology in ear, neurotology, skull base surgery, newborn hearing screening programs, central auditory processing disorders, age-related hearing loss, hearing aids and cochlear implantation services in developing countries, modern rehabilitation and special education for hard-of-hearing people. Scientific programs will promote research and clinical work in the field.

Hearing International will be holding a board meeting and general assembly to review HI development in the past year and develop action plans for the upcoming year.

Shanghai is a noted historical, modern and cultural city. The Bund, with a dazzling collection of architecture of international styles, the four hundred year old historical garden - Yu Yuan, and the global financial center, which is the fourth tallest building in the world, are located in the city center. In addition,  World Expo 2010, being held in Shanghai, will be open throughout the month of October. Over 240 countries and/or regions are represented in the Expo. You can visit many interesting pavilions and have lots of fun.  Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity.

Prof. Jan Grote Sec. General of IFOS attended the 15th Indonesian ORL – H&N Congress, held every three years. During his opening remarks, he stressed the important global issue of Hearing for All. He pointed out that in each country the top down policy for a sustainable program is important for the prevention of deafness and hearing impairments which India has successfully accomplished.

I wish to share the sad unpredicted resignation of Dr.Young Ah Ku from her position at the WHO head office in Geneva. Dr. Young’s resignation is unfortunate for hearing loss issues, even though her position was not a structured chair in the WHO. Grote mentioned also that IFOS is the only NGO in WHO.

At the meeting with the Dir. General of the Community Health Development of the MOH of the Republic of Indonesia, Grote stressed the importance of primary ear care as part of primary health care.

The 12th Hearing International Meeting will be held in conjunction with the Asia –Oceania Otolaryngology Congress in Auckland- New Zealand, 1st – 4th March 2011. HI members and audiologist will enjoy reduction registration fee.
