REMINDER: Funding Session THIS FRIDAY

KDT is delighted to host a FREE session on Funding Opportunities for ALL Toronto-area dancers during our Summer Training Intensive. There is absolutely NO fee to attend this brief session on funding opportunities for dancers and choreographers (with a focus on Aboriginal dancers). Presenters will include representatives from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, the Toronto Arts Council, Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists (CADA) and the Dancers Transition Resource Centre (DTRC).

KDT is looking for an accountant/ money manager/ math whiz to sit on the Board of Directors. Are you an accountant who believes in the promotion and cultivation of Aboriginal Arts? Please inquire with us about this position.

Do you know an Arts Administrator? KDT would like to hire a P/T administrator for the Toronto office this year. Details of the post will be available on our website by the end of August, but go ahead and send us your C.V. now. Ideally candidates have recently graduated or are in their final year of an arts administration program.

Dusk Dances runs from TONIGHT (THURSDAY) THROUGH SUNDAY! Pay-what-you-can admission.

Entrance to Chalkfarm Park is on the west side of Jane Street just north of North York Sheridan Mall (beside the Fire Station) or over the bridge from the North Parking Lot of North York Sheridan Mall. For detailed directions click here.

Wow! It's been an exciting week. KDT's Summer Aboriginal Dance Training Intensive is off to an amazing start. Dancers are sweating their way through long days of ballet, and confessed to being incredibly sore after only one day! This is the only program offering Aboriginal Dance as part of a comprehensive training program for pre-professionals.

Join our company dancers next week as they study Hoop Dancing with Rosa and Beany John. There are a limited number of slots open for our 2nd week which runs from August 17th -23rd & a full two week session includes Viewpoints (great for actors and can be taken by itself) with acclaimed dancer-actor-choreographer Michael Greyeyes. SADTI Viewpoints only: $220 + $30 Registration fee

TWO FREE EVENTS - ONE INCREDIBLE NIGHT

This opening spectacle gathers and welcomes all to our Redpath Stage and allows everyone to pay their respects to the traditional people of this land, the Mississaugas of the New Credit. The opening spectacle is choreographed by our own award-winning artistic director/ dancer/ choreographer Santee Smith from Six Nations of the Grand River. Join our circle, with dancers such as Gaetan Gingras, Doonooch Dance Company and Kaha:wi Dance Theatre and local singers as they unite in celebration. We promise to have you up dancing and singing along with us.

One of Kaha:wi Dance Theatre’s dearest friends and advisors, Mr. John Kim Bell will conduct a symphonic orchestra concert on August 14th, 2009 at 8:30 PM on the Sirius Stage at the Harbourfront Centre.

Mr. Bell’s roots as a symphonic conductor are well-known throughout Canada. He is the first Aboriginal person to conduct a symphonic orchestra in North America. He was the Associate Conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic and has trained with such figures as famed conductor Leonard Bernstein.

Performed earlier this summer in Vancouver, one critic wrote:

[It was] so site-specific it was a little eerie how well it fit into the outdoor settings.
[Kaha:wi] was performed in a clearing surrounded by cedars and Douglas firs. Even though the sun hadn’t yet set, the trees were dense enough to keep out direct light. In the dusk, the beige and earthtones of the four women’s costumes glowed. It felt magical, as if a fairy or sprite might appear from behind a tree at any moment.

The women’s movements were graceful and rhythmic: they moved as if they were channeling an elemental current. As they danced, their costumes flowed and waved to accentuate their synchronized movements. The soundscape was superb: it created a sonic environment that made me feel as if I was immersed in the sound of the dance.
