Seniors The Wellers were excited at the prospect of playing at HQ, made even more exciting when it was apparent that wind was not going to be a factor. Ormond came out hard and fast and jumped us with three quick goals, before the Wellers realised that they had a match on their hands. The pressure, and run from the "Monds" was giving their supporters much to be excited about as the lead stretched to 33 points mid way through the second quarter. A couple of key positional changes came from the Weller's coaching box, placed some players into the fray who had decided that they weren't going to allow the boys from E.E. Gunn an easy afternoon. The Wellers peppered the scoring zone, although the points seemed to be more popular. By half time the margin was back to 20, both sides on equal scoring shots. The third was a tough, tight affair, with the Wellers coming out on top with 4 goals to 2. The stage was set for another cracking last quarter, the 4th game in a row where the margin at the final break was a goal or less. Debutante Jack Ymer confirmed the faith shown in him by scoring two very sharp goals from Warren Carlyle taps at boundary throw ins deep in the forward line. Another highlight in this quarter was the "hanger" taken by Jack Duke deep within the forward line mid quarter. When asked later in the afternoon if he saw the big mark, Jordan Heffernan replied that he hadn't due to the fact that young "Skillsy" was sitting on his head! Fortunately a goal was the outcome otherwise i don't think that the coach would have been too happy to see his wing man competing with his key forwards for the ball. The football close and desperate, however the Wellers piled on the pressure to run out winners by 11 points. Importantly, the win for them keeps them in close touch with the top four teams. Better Players were Ben Hart, John Frattin, Nick Latsas, Warren Carlyle and Roh Kapoor.
Reserves In what has become a repetitive theme our Reserves side suffered from some very poor skill errors on the weekend which resulted in a loss to Ormond by 4 goals. If it had not been for the superb effort of James Robinson on the ball, ably supported by his side kick Andrew Hudson the score line could have looked a lot worse. Jon Derry also worked tirelessly in the ruck and Jarod Collins has become the fix it man, playing well both forward and back. Peter Storey has maintained his good early form and was well supported by Andrew Romanin when he moved into the centre during the 2nd half. Alex McKenzie gave us some real fight at Centre Half Forward, however we were just not been able to convert a winning score. It will take a real effort from all players on the training track to lift our performance during the middle part of the season. As always a special mention to those players that made themselves available to be goal or boundary umpire, team runner or water boys.

Under 19 Saturday posed our biggest test to date up against the powerhouse club in Old Xavs. We knew that we would have to come out all guns blazing to be competitive and our first quarter started with real intent and commitment at the ball. It payed off by kicking two quick goals however we missed some opportunities as Old Xavs rebounded to kick goals at the other end on 2 occasions. At qtr time we were a little unlucky to finish only one point in front. The second quarter was a different story altogether. Old Xavs come out fired up and started to win the football in close and their outside runners began to take over with skill and pace, allowing them to kick 5 goals to our one. They took a commanding lead into halftime. The third quarter was more of the same, whilst we where playing some good footy in patches Old Xavs seemed to have all the answers. Their transition from defence to attack was something to behold as they ran in waves through the middle with pace and great skill. At the end of 3, 7 goals down, meant the mountain in front of us would be very difficult to climb. The final quarter was very even, both teams kicking 2 goals. The game had lost its sting but we ran the game out with great pride and endeavour proving we can match it with the very best teams. We now face the hardest task in VAFA under 19 football - De la Salle away. It will take a 4 quarter effort to get over this immense challenge, one that I’m sure the entire team is looking forward to.
Under 18 Once again, we found ourselves with only 18 available players. It is obvious through our results that we have a very talented group but relying on individual performances and risking injury through having to play games with no rotations or interchange will simply not work for us every week with 12 games and finals ahead, and the formation of a new division with a much more even competition. We lost Prowse before the game with a foot injury and faced a danger game against St Johns with only 17 players. The inevitable outcome of earning the reputation of a winning Team is that it means team performance must be maintained and increased to higher levels because opponents will lift their own performance against the better teams. St Johns had improved significantly from our Round 2 game and were motivated to knock us off. They realised we were undermanned and got a sniff that we were vulnerable. At half-time we were 17 points down and feeling the hard effort of 17 players pushing themselves with few rotations or rest. Once again, the character and will of this Team to overcome obstacles was sparked by someone leading the way. Stef and Ramy really increased their work rate and effort in the crucial 3rd quarter and the rest of our team followed. A dominant feature of Old Camberwell's U18 Playing Group is that, despite being undermanned, despite tiredness and despite reasons to back off, these players have consistently performed better in the second half of each game - except the first game. This coming Saturday face our biggest challenge yet, taking on ladder leaders - St Bede's /Mentone Tigers - to see who rightfully deserves the mantle as U18 South's best team before the changes in Divisions takes place. If pride and character have anything to do with winning, the OCGFC U18 Team have a powerful arsenal of weapons to take into this Round 7 match of the day.
