Senior
Sixth placed Ormond travelled to Gordon Barnard Oval to meet the fourth placed Old Camberwell in a must win clash for both teams if they were to harbour high hopes of some September action. The game was played in surprisingly windier conditions than were originally forecast, with the wind running to the club house end, at an advantage of about 3 to 4 goals. Ormond, wearing their reverse strip, won the toss and kicked with the advantage on offer. Both sides entered their "forward 45" zone 12 times but the visitors had a slight advantage on the scoreboard albeit accuracy in front of goal was an issue, and they led by 9 points at the first change. The contest became a very dour affair in Q2, and it was very much a battle of the back lines. Cam Wilson was a shining light for the home side, repelling numerous Ormond forward forays, setting the ball up for his team mates up field. The half time score line was 4 goals apiece. Outsiders may have thought that the ground was in poor condition, given the low score line. In fact, it was a fast track, with the cricket pitch area being relatively stable as well. Ormond grabbed the advantage in the third quarter and repeatedly brought the ball forward, gaining a 14 point advantage at the final break. Camberwell were probably in luck, given the fact that the forward entries into the key scoring zone was 2 to 1 in favour of the visitors. The Camberwell players were reminded in somewhat forthright terms by the coach to lower their sights when taking the ball forward, and look for the shorter options. The Monds were rolling back hard to cover off the Wellers key forward line targets, making it difficult for the small forwards to strut their stuff. Enter mid fielder Roh Kapoor (fresh from his photo shoot where he now features on the front cover of the August issue of Men's Health), first gamer Alex Lattuada (Under 19s Captain), Vice Captain Danny Desanctis and Nick Latsas who all participated in a final quarter goal fest which totalled 6 goals 5 points to the visitors 1 goal 2 points to enable the home side to take the valuable 4 points, winning by 19 points. Better Players were Jordan Heffernan (mid field), Cam Wilson, Phil Bennett, Roh Kapoor, Mitch Hough & Danny Desanctis

Reserve
In a very disciplined effort from the Reserves team the final score line in our Match against Ormond did not reflect the status of the game for 3 quarters. With a fresh breeze behind them in the last quarter, Ormond took a 9 point lead at 3 quarter time and ran all over us to finish 14 gls 16 behinds to Old Camberwell 8 gls 8 behinds. During the first half a number of outstanding efforts were given by the likes of Jon Derry in the Ruck, James (Chiz) Robinson on the ball and Alister Lloyd who played his first game for the season. Brett Cottrell provided another exhibition of class with a magnificent running mark, blind turn and slotted the kick through for a goal. Not to be upstaged our resident lunatic Matt Decarne took what would have to be one of the most courageous marks of the year, managed to get up after being cut in half and then popped the resultant free kick through the big sticks. Dan Morley across the half back line was a real springboard into attack and Matt Cottrell controlling the centre was well supported by Peter Storey on his wing. Alex McKenzie again was on the wrong end of a high tackle but at least this time it was not “friendly fire”. This week we take on Ajax at their home ground and then we are off to the Gala Dinner to hopefully celebrate our latest victory.
Under 18
Our Mission to Werribee started almost in the dark as the bus departed from Gordon Barnard Reserve at 7:25am. With the late withdrawal of Will McCallum with tonsilitis, we had 21 available players, although James Kennedy was nursing a bad corkie and would remain on the bench unless absolutely needed. We welcomed Stuart Sharp, Simon Bennett and Tom Bulmer for their first game with the U18s and this was to be Jos Op ’t Hoog’s last game for us before he heads off for an overseas adventure. I’m sure it was an imposing sight for our opponents to see the bus turn up and a complete playing group stride to the centre of their ground as a single unit. Our mission today was to come away with a win against a fast running team, cement our position in the four and gain a 2 game break over fourth position. We were all at the ground together with time to focus and prepare in the correct manner as a Team. This game was against a genuine finals contender who were very well prepared and with well rehearsed game structures. The all important mental side of our game with talk, encouragement and thinking was missing in the first quarter. All the yak had been left on the bus. Werribee burst out of the blocks on their ground with 8 shots on goal for 6.2. We managed only 3 shots for a late goal. We were 30 points down against a dangerous team at quarter time. We needed to wake up and get into the game before it got away from us. Some positional changes and getting the mental side of our game going did the trick and we started to click. 7 shots for 6.1 to Werribee’s 3 shots for 1.2 saw us down by only 1 point at half-time. A solid second quarter had got us back into the game and now it was evenly poised. Throughout this season, our U18 Playing Group have shown that they respond well to challenges. We chose to take on Werribee and attack. Both sides had 5 shots on goal with our result being 2.3 to their 1.4 for a 4 point lead at three quarter time. The final quarter would need to be our best quarter to take the game. Werribee would use all of their home ground tricks to pinch a win. Five shots on goal for a perfect outcome against Werribee’s 5 shots for 2.3 really didn’t show how dominant we were in the last quarter. The second half resulted in 7.3 to their 3.7. This was a very important win for us. It was a phsychologically powerful win that sets us up for a real crack at the other finals contenders.
