Seniors
Gusty conditions were the order of the day at GBO, with the players encountering a strong Northerly that favoured the team kicking to the club house end. The Wellers lost the toss and kicked into the breeze, yet were able to display great skill & endeavour to out score the opposition 5 goals to 4, including 3 from the Wellers young power forward Sam Killworth, giving them a 5 point lead at the first break. The large crowd in attendance who had enjoyed a Wellsmen club organised luncheon were vocal in their support of the home team. In a strong reversal of form on the previous week, they were able to find their forward targets and slot home the goals. Wellers 4 goals in the second and the opposition being kept goal less opened the match up for an interesting second half. The young Wellers defense, led by Ben Hart & Jack Le Cerf was on its collective game, repeatedly thwarting the opposition forward forays. Phil Bennett & Andy Clarke were busy in the mid field working the ball from defense into attack. Playing with one man down for the first half of the third quarter the Wellers had to adopt a new style of play, which resembled a "half court press" in basketball parlance. OGs scored 3 goals with the wind, and kept the Wellers to 1, leaving a 15 point difference at the final break. Enter Warren Carlyle, the Wellers big forward with three strong, contested pack marks in the goal score, and converting for three goals out of a 5.7 Q.4 scoreline, to run out winners by 38 points. Better players were Ben Hart, Phil Bennett, Andy Clarke, Greg Tolson, Sam Killworth & Steve Romanin

Under 18
Our mid-season struggle with getting a Team on the park continued with only 18 available players for this week’s repeat game against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers – this time at their Brindisi Street home ground. With only 6 games remaining before finals, another win would almost certainly guarantee us a finals spot. In atrociously windy, coastal conditions blowing straight across the postage stamp sized ground at Mentone, the battle was going to be a highly physical and relentless one. It would come down to the 18 players representing our Team to manufacture a win for us. It was a gritty, dour affair that was mostly not pretty, but our young Team applied themselves admirably to the task and, once again, improved as the game went on. One enormous positive that has come out of our constant battle with playing constantly variable personnel has been the opportunity to throw different players into unfamiliar positions and situations without notice. Almost without exception, the players our young Team have had to rely on in any given week have risen to the challenges and performed beyond initial expectations. We have been able to gather a valuable knowledge base on the versatility and capability of many players from circumstances that generally would not have presented themselves. We’ve so far played 35 different players in our Team but we have yet to have more than 20 available to choose from on any given week. All indications are that we have weathered the greatest part of the unavailability storm and the next few weeks will see our playing list swell with those returning from injury and overseas sojourns. The next two months will be both an exciting and challenging time for the U18 playing group.
