<<First Name>>, now what ... ? Our new High School Pastor Chris Nye taught on "New Beginnings" this morning [see video clip], which is right where your students are, and what we all need to hear. They are on the brink of a new season — Summer is here, school is out, some are transitioning from the 'top' of their school to being the 'little persons' again in middle school — it's a new day with new opportunities and decisions in how to invest our time, talents and treasure. What's more: many of the students demonstrated their desire to trust Jesus as their Savior in recent weeks, and so begins new life in Christ. Now what ...? The Christian life is a series of new beginnings, and if we are to grow deep in Christ we must come back to the beginning — what is it all about? Jesus and His Good News. Following Him stems from knowing Him, and living in Him, experiencing the closeness we have with God our Father. Read Colossians 2:6-10 , and see if you can find a handful of word pictures or metaphors in the first couple verses: 6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. (hint: walking, a plant, a building, a foundation, a classroom & overflowing like a river)
The rest of our passage today continues: 8 Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. 9 For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. 10 So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority. Discussion questions: - Has your life really changed since you received Jesus? (How?)
- How has your "house" (heart) changed? Are there different things in your rooms? Does it look different?
- What are two ways you will begin to walk in faith this week?
Walking. Rooted. Being taught. Overflowing with thanksgiving. Jeff Patterson Associate Pastor jeff@willamettechurch.com |
