Moray Tourism Conference

It's been a busy and interesting couple of months, the highlight being the Moray Tourism Conference held on the 24th of February 2010 at the excellent Robbie Dhu Centre, Glenfiddich.

The timing was a bit unfortunate as it was snowing heavily that day but despite the bad weather conditions we had 88 enthusiastic people attending. There was a great "buzz" in the room and the overall feedback has been positive and focussed on working together to promote tourism in Moray effectively.

Feedback on the top three recommended action points for Moray Tourism Development was very helpful to us.  See below the results which have been posted to the blog earlier.

Most mentioned recommendations were:
  • better marketing/promotion and a good web portal
  • working together with other tourism businesses
  • skills training and development
These are all very good points and they will be our focus of attention for the 2010 season. See the blog for more info, pictures and video's of the event, pod-casts to follow.

Fundraising seminar

The week before the conference we held a VisitScotland Growth Fund Open Day, which was oversubscribed - the good news is there is another opportunity coming up for organisations and individuals interested in funding opportunities. A Fundraising Seminar organised by Moray Council is to be held on Thursday 1st of April at Elgin Town Hall, from 10am - 2.45pm.

The event is free of charge, refreshments and light buffet will be made available. For further information on the seminar contact 01343 563347/ 563283/ 563493

Events Calendar

Another suggestion made at various meetings was to create an events calendar and newsletter which can be used by tourists and locals as well as event organisers to avoid clashing with other events. We aim to work together with the Visitor Information Centre in Elgin, Northern Scot and GreaterSpeyside who already have event calendars, to make one easy accessible events calendar & newsletter which can be shared with others.

To add your event to our Moray calendar click here where you can add details of any event big or small.

Promotional packages

Press trips and competitions are an excellent way of promoting the area.  Anyone interested in offering accommodation, tickets to an attraction, event or activity as part of a commercial package for press trips, competitions and other promotions showcasing the best of Moray, please contact us

Speyside Tours

Last week we had a meeting with a small tour company based in Edinburgh that is looking to organise 2-3 day tours this summer to Speyside. He would like to get in touch with accommodation providers (B&B/Hotels) visitor attractions (distilleries, castles) and food & drink businesses that are interested in linking up with him. The tours are flexible and depend on what the customers want to do and see and where they want to stay. Group size is between 6 and 12 people.  Let us know if you would be interested in being involved with this and we'll pass on the details of this tour operator.

Accommodation during festivals

The event organisers of the Spirit of Speyside Festival and the Scottish International Festival of Trumpets keep us informed of accommodation requests during their festivals and our Moray accommodation database is set up to list all accommodation providers that have availability over the festival periods. If you still have accommodation available over one of the festivals let us know so we can direct accommodation requests to you.

Keep us informed

We like to hear from you, and what is going on in Moray Tourism, opportunities, events etc, so keep us posted on anything we can help you with. Love to hear from you.

The next communication will be about data gathering as we hope you will help us with providing occupancy levels over the first three months of 2010.

Kind regards,

Marion Walker and Rene Looper
