June 2006

First off I hope I find everyone healthy and happy working towards their fitness goals or achieving all goals that you may have.  I have recently turned 50 and with many mailings of my AARP card coming for over 6 months now I am reminded even more how important it is to be in the best shape as possible chasing around a 10 year old son.  The big party that I wanted to have was more for my appreciation over the years to all our clients that have made it a honor to be able to do my part in helping people get in better shape and also make a living doing that, and for the trainers that have worked hard in helping not only you the clients but also Fitness Evolution. Max asked me the next day if I was a little overwhelmed by how many people there were at the party and I got to thinking about that and to tell you the truth I was humbled and very appreciative of what has become of my little basement business.  I want to thank everyone for the cards and the gifts; I will be drinking lots of Starbucks now since I received so many gift cards from that little chain of coffee stores!

Body Composition vs. Weight
Since I have been working with people I really have no idea how many times I have talked about scale weight compared to body composition.  I have great respect for a man that I have been associated with since I started, his name is Art Rothafel and he is right on with my belief in the right and healthy way to lose sizes or fit into your clothes better. I always get great information from him and I would like to share some with you. There is a trainer in Florida who requires all of her clients to turn in his or her bathroom scale when they start a 12 week program.  She says it drives home the concept of body composition over pounds on the scale.  Weight does not mean anything!!  If you gain 3 lbs but lose two dress sizes… would that be o.k.?  Then why are you using the scale to measure anything?  Like Aaron Wilson says when working with his clients, would you keep a friend that always lies to you, that is what a scale does!

Then there is the numbers crunch, or the big question of "Can I afford to do this"? Another trainer out of NYC, simply asks his female clients to put things in perspective by asking this question: “How much do you spend each month on hair, skin and nails?”  Multiply that number by 12 for the yearly total. Most spend well over $1,000 for less than 5% of their body. So, almost any Personal Training package comes in under that price tag – and generally affects 100% of the body - including hair, skin and nails.

How many times have we heard this, "I do not have time right now to fit this in my busy schedule"? If you workout for one 1 hour, five 5 days a week, that’s less than 3% of the time. Divide 5 by 168 hours,  that’s why nutrition and other lifestyle factors are so important…yes, including sleep.

I hope everyone is working towards understanding that when you workout it is not always about the outside way we look, but also what we are exercising inside the body!!

Until next time, happy training!
