Help for Speakers:Tip of the Week #13 Be specific

from Rachel Prosser
www.HelpforSpeakers.com

This is my final week working with a students from the GATE programe (Gifted and Talented Extension) at a Heaton Normal Intermediate School.

Of course, whenever you teach, you learn something new. I learned from the Year Fives that their teacher, Mrs Chambers doesn’t like them using the word “stuff”,  She wants them to be specific.

I’m with Mrs Chambers on this one . Your communication will be more compelling if you can choose descriptive rather than generic words.

Compare these two:

My mum was a good cook and there was always food for dinner.

My mum was a good cook, we would come home to Shepherd’s Pie, Roast chicken and Mince-on-toast.

Forsake the general for the specific, and your presentation will have more impact.

Today on the Help for Speakers Q and A @ 1 the theme will be warm-ups, but you can bring any speaking or marketing related area you'd like to discuss.  Join me by ringing 0800 449 288, and entering the guest code 54052101#.

From Australia call  at 11am on 1800 036 0901, from the US call in Tuesdays at 9pm EST and ring 1866 814 5210.
