Help for Speakers Tip of the Week
Things in your head that get in the way: Part 1

Of all the things that gets in the way when you're speaking, the "Will they like me?" question is perhaps the biggest.

What is more important is whether you like them? Real warmth and respect comes through, and if you like your audience, you want to serve them, and have a conversation with them.  You want to get up there and enjoy helping them by presenting information that they find useful and entertaining, in a way they enjoy receiving it and will find useful.

When you stop thinking "will they like me" and start thinking "how can I serve them" you'll channel your energy in a much more useful and productive way.

And, paradoxically, they'll be more likely to like you anyway.

"Rachel delivered her message with clarity, enthusiasm and professionalism.  She had obviously prepared well, and we enjoyed her interactive style and thought-provoking presentation. Her use of humour, as well as her ability to connect with her audience, was outstanding.   Our speakers are allowed 20 minutes which Rachel timed to perfection.  There were plenty of people who wanted to engage with Rachel immediately after her presentation, which is a good sign that people wanted to learn more"
