May 1, 2010, Special Edition

This Tuesday, May 4, is important for two reasons!

Celebrity Server Night is on Tuesday, May 4, 2010.  This is a cooperative effort between the Manchester Community Schools Foundation, school district employees, and local restaurants.   School staff members will be celebrity servers at the Dairy Queen, Stockwell’s Dinner Tonight, Frank's, and Classic Pizza from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.   Enjoy a meal out (or pick up take-out to eat at home), be served by one of the school “celebrities,” support a local business, and support your local schools' foundation all at the same time!

Our annual school election is also on May 4, 2010.   On May 4 residents of the district will elect two school board members and vote on proposals to renew the non-homestead operating millage that is collected on non-homestead properties (properties other than one’s primary residence).  Voting takes place at township halls.

The ballot proposals on May 4 are millage renewal proposals which have no impact, either way, on taxes on a primary (homestead) residence.  How you vote on the proposals will not change the property tax rate you pay.  The vote does not increase taxes on non-homestead properties.   There are two ballot questions and both are renewals. Neither proposal raises taxes on any property owner.   Both proposals are important for our schools.

The millage proposals are of critical importance for our community and its schools.   If the non-homestead millage is not renewed, our schools will lose an additional 1.16 million dollars in operating revenue.  This revenue loss would be on top of the reductions in state revenue with which the district has been grappling.   If the non-homestead millage renewals are not approved, the district will need to consider reductions that could include ten to fourteen teaching positions, all athletics, all non-athletic extracurricular activities, and all general education transportation.   Passage of these renewal proposals will prevent the very serious challenges we face from becoming much worse.

May 4, 2010 is of critical importance to our community and its schools.   Please remember to vote!  And, after you vote, patronize one of the restaurants participating in our celebrity server event!
