Education Excellence in a Caring Community

Happy July!  Following are some brief updates on planning that is happening in anticipation of school resuming in September.

Open House:  Our second annual district-wide open house will occur on Wednesday, September 1, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.  All school buildings will be open, with staff members present, providing student and families an opportunity to see classrooms and meet teachers in preparation for the start of the new school year.

First Day of School:  The first day of student instruction for the 2010-2011 school year will be Tuesday, September 7, 2010.  It will be a full day of school for students.

Community Meeting:  The Chelsea Area Wellness Center recently approved a grant request for the Manchester Community Fitness Facility.  Located behind Manchester Middle School, for the past several years the facility been operated by a committed core of volunteers.  The grant from the Wellness Foundation is an opportunity for the Manchester community to develop a new vision for the fitness center, one that transforms the center into a vital hub for not only fitness activity, but also wellness information and programs.  The grant provides funding for developing and implementing the vision; however, the vision needs to be one that is self-sustaining.  Broad community input is critical in this process.   A community meeting - to begin the process of developing this vision - is scheduled for Tuesday, July 27, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the fitness center.

Employment Opportunities:  The school district is seeking applicants for two part-time custodial positions.  The positions are for four hours each evening during the school year; during school vacations periods, persons in the positions will work eight-hour day shifts.   Additional information about these two positions may be found at the employment opportunities link of our district webpage, www.mcs.k12.mi.us.  Only on-line applications are accepted.  The application deadline is Friday, July 30, 2010.

Staffing Update:  We are continuing to fine-tune our staffing and instructional schedules for the 2010-2011 school year and will do so into August.  At this time, based on known student enrollment numbers, our class sizes in grades K-7 all are at 25 students or less.    Come August, across our district, you will find class sizes that are competitive with all neighboring school districts, and student achievement levels that are superior to other schools in our area.

Manchester Schools Come Out on Top!  A recently released "Top to Bottom" ranking of public schools in Michigan provides strong independent evidence of the success being achieved by the Manchester Community School District.   Manchester Middle School was the highest ranked school in Washtenaw County, and at all levels, our schools were among the top ranked schools in our area.  Complete information, including a comparison of our schools to others in the area may be found by clicking here.

District-Wide Summer Newsletter:  Again this year, we are working with SteeleGrafix on a special edition of M Magazine that will include the annual summer newsletter from the school district.    If you would like to purchase advertising in this publication that will be delivered to all 48158 addresses and all non-48158 addresses at which Manchester students reside, please contact SteeleGrafix at 428-9680.

Community Events:  While the Fourth of July fireworks, Community Fair, and Chicken Broil are now past, there are still great community events on the calendar for families to enjoy.  Please refer to the website of the Manchester Community Chamber of Commerce for additional information.  The website address is:  48158.com
