News & Announcements Georgia Law enrolls its highest credentialed class ever The most academically talented class in the history of the law school recently began the three-year pursuit of a law degree. The Class of 2012 is comprised of 241 students from 27 states and 90 undergraduate schools. More than half of the students starting this fall scored 164 or higher on the Law School Admission Test, placing these students in the top 10 percent of test takers nationwide. The median undergraduate grade point average of the class is 3.7. (learn more)
Bondurant and Klein receive Georgia Law's most prestigious alumni award Georgia Law's alumni association recently presented its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Scroll Award, to Emmet J. Bondurant II (LL.B.'60) of Atlanta, Ga., and Kenneth "Ken" Klein (J.D.'76) of Washington, D.C. This award is given annually to individuals whose dedication and service to the legal profession and the law school deserve special recognition. Business Law and Ethics Program underway at law school With an eye toward providing students with practical legal training in the context of a business law practice, Georgia Law’s Business Law and Ethics program is now in full operation. Headed by former National Service Industries President Carol Morgan (J.D.'79), the program's key elements include core classes, practice-based courses and experiential learning components such as externships and participation in the American Bar Association Law Student Division’s Negotiation Competition, the Business Law Society and the Annual Business/Law Symposium. Faculty on the Record Associate Professor Lori A. Ringhand's research was featured in The New York Times as a chart analyzing how past and current U.S. Supreme Court justices handled questions about specific cases during their Senate confirmation hearings.
Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears was quoted in an Associated Press article about serving as a visiting professor for the 2009-10 academic year at Georgia Law, where she will teach a course on family law.
Shackelford Distinguished Professor Walter Hellerstein was quoted in Business Week regarding whether or not states can charge taxes on out-of-state companies if they have customers in that state but no physical presence.
Dean and Hosch Professor Rebecca Hanner White has been elected to the executive board of the U.S. branch of the International Society for Labor and Social Security Law.
Callaway Chair Ronald L. Carlson has been selected to participate in West Publishing's Author's Inside Look program, which brings together a small group of legal authors from around the nation to discuss how West can improve its publishing process as well as the future of law school publishing in general.

Around the Law School International programs continue strong enrollment This summer, nearly 20 percent of the rising second-year class took advantage of Georgia Law’s legal study/work abroad opportunities. From summer study programs in China and Belgium to interning in a legal setting in one of more than 15 countries, students were able to expand their global knowledge while gaining valuable legal experience. Please visit www.law.uga.edu/alumni/events/2009bbq to order tickets online. 27 graduates secure federal judicial clerkships; Opportunities to hire quality Georgia Law alumni Former Georgia Law students performed well this past hiring season in their search for a judicial clerkship. Nearly 30 obtained positions with federal judges in addition to others being selected for state and local judicial clerkships. There are several ways for you to find your own well qualified Georgia Law student or graduate. The law school’s Office of Legal Career Services is prepared to assist you with on-campus interviews, job postings and job fairs, among other services.
Introducing the 2009-11 Public Interest Fellow and the new assistant director of Legal Career Services Alison Spiers has joined Georgia Law as its 2009-11 Public Interest Fellow. She will focus on developing a sustainable program that will advocate for the homeless and those at risk of homelessness while incorporating law students in the provision of services. Her host organization is Georgia Legal Services. Additionally, Sara Schramm has joined the law school’s staff as assistant director of Legal Career Services. Schramm earned her bachelor's degree from UGA and her J.D. from Brooklyn Law School. She has practiced with Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York City and Evert Weathersby Houff in Athens.
Alumni directory update We are pleased to announce Harris Connect has finished its work on the law school’s fifth annual alumni directory, which is being published to help mark the law school’s 150th anniversary. If you ordered a print or CD directory, it should arrive later this fall. However, we wanted to make you aware that the University of Georgia has started working on an alumni directory of its own with Harris Connect. Students on the record Many Georgia Law students had memorable summers and a few even made the headlines. Third-year student Jeffrey A. Zachman appeared on CNN as part of a student panel discussing Justice Sonia M. Sotomayor’s U.S. Supreme Court confirmation hearings; his classmate Philip D. Henderson was featured in The Red & Black for assisting with the conviction of a drug trafficker as part of his internship with the Griffin Judicial Circuit; and third-year student Christopher L. Lockwood published "Biotechnology Industry Organization v. District of Columbia: A Preemptive Strike Against State Price Restrictions on Prescription Pharmaceuticals" in 19 Albany Law Journal of Science & Technology 143 (2009).
