WHAT'S UP

JDF Begins Partnership with World Food Program
The John Dau Foundation recently joined in partnership with the World Food Program to provide over 17 metric tons of food to the Duk County area over the next year. JDF will partner in three WFP programs:
  • Institutional Feeding Program, which will provide meals for patients who come to the Clinic from long distances for treatment.
  • Food for Training, which will provide food for the trainings of 152 people throughout the coming year by the DLBC, covering various aspects of health promotion and service provision. Participants will include Traditional Birth Attendants, Community Health Workers, and a youth drama club that will use community theatre to teach about health issues, including HIV.
  • Food for Recovery, which will provide food for two dozen laborers and their families for a month, as they carry out various rehabilitation and facilities improvements around the Clinic, including the construction of a permanent fence to improve safety and hygiene at the Clinic.
Sudan is the WFP's largest program, and it plans to deliver some 118,000 metric tons of food in South Sudan this year. The food provided here will be an important complement to the Clinic's activities in 2010.

Blood Bank Opens at the Duk Lost Boys Clinic
This month, a new blood bank opened at the Duk Lost Boys Clinic, bringing a much needed and vital capability to the region. Earlier this month, the first life-saving blood transfusion ever to occur in Duk County happened, saving the life of a 23 year old mother who was having difficulty recovering from her recent pregnancy.

This remarkable story, and many others, are featured on the new John Dau Foundation blog. To read more, click here.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Host a Viewing Party!
John Dau’s journey from genocide to prosperity is documented in a beautiful film, “God Grew Tired of Us: The Story of Lost Boys of Sudan (2006),” directed by Christopher Dillion Quinn and Tommy Walker. It gives the viewer an in-depth look at the struggles the Lost Boys had to overcome and their adjustment to American society. Inspire friends and family by hosting a screening of the film at your local community center and send proceeds back to JDF to help our mission of improving healthcare in South Sudan.

The rights for “God Grew Tired of Us” are owned by NewMarket Films.
