CHICA-HANDIC Education Day a Huge Success
Entry for June 14th, 2010: Dear Diary, Today I attended the annual infection control education day in Hamilton. It was called All in the Family. I learned a lot about the little critters in my closet, under my bed, on my skin and in my head. So many people came and cheered for May Griffiths-Turner, one of the ICPs from St. Joseph's Healthcare in Hamilton, when she won the HANDIC Hygiea Award. Had lots of fun and can't wait to find out next year's theme!

Have you heard the term positive deviance tossed around lately and want to learn more about it? You're in luck! A recently published book entitled: The Power of Positive Deviance: How Unlikely Innovators Solve the World’s Toughest Problems written by Richard Pasquale, Jerry Sternin and Monique Sternin (available through Harvard Business Press [2010]). For a sneak peek, check out the Book Review.
Outpatient Surgery Centre Infection Control Problems Identified
A U.S. federal survey of outpatient surgery centres in three states found lapses in infection prevention and control practices. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) looked at ambulatory surgical centres (ASCs) in Maryland, North Carolina and Oklahoma, and found that nearly 70% had lapses in infection control. More than half of the clinics surveyed had been cited by state officials for hospital infection control deficiencies. The results of the CDC outpatient infection survey were published in the Journal for the American Medical Association (JAMA). For a copy of this article, contact us. The survey comes as outpatient surgery has grown to dominate the medical field, with an estimated 75% of all surgeries currently being performed at ASCs instead of traditional hospitals. The number of surgical centres grew by an average of 8.3% per year from 1999 to 2005. Similar trends to move surgeries into ambulatory clinics is occurring in Canada.
Study: Hospital Surgical Infection Measures Don’t Predict Outcomes
Surgery can be risky. In recent years there's been an emphasis on making it less so. An recent article in JAMA, Adherence to Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) Measures, shows data to consider using the six infection prevention measures combined rather than separately.  To read more about this click

CBIC Certification Computerized Exam Changes
The Certification in Infection Control (CIC) exam is based on periodic Practice Analyses to identify the role of an Infection Control Practitioner. As a result, the content of the exam will change. The Computer Based Test (CBT) will change July 1, 2010 and the Self-Achievement Recertification Exam (SARE) will change January 1, 2011. The content outline and references have been updated. To view them click here. To read more about the Practice Analysis and to see the updated Content Outline click here. Updated references can be viewed here.

For the Pickin'
Raspberries and cherries are ready for pickin', so how about some fresh infection prevention and control products? The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) recently released new guidelines and surveys to sweeten up your program. Simply click on these links to view them and add to your basket of IC goodies.

IPAC Core Competencies Are Being Revitalized
On April 1, 2010 the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Core Competencies transitioned to the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion (OAHPP) from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The OAHPP will begin the task of revitalizing the IPAC Core Competencies and would like to take this opportunity to update you on our plans. Their goal is to provide a comprehensive education program that will enhance the safety of our patients and health care providers. The RICNs will be involved in this work and more information will be provided as it becomes available.

LTC Interest Group
Cheryl Collins (ICP at Macassa and Wentworth Lodges in Hamilton) has volunteered for the position of Chair (1yr term) of the National LTC Interest Group during the annual meeting held recently at the CHICA National Conference in Vancouver. If you are a CHICA chapter member and are interested in participating as a 'general member' please send your expression of interest to Cheryl at cheryl.collins@hamilton.ca
