This past Monday the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) wrapped up it's Fifth Decennial International Conference on Healthcare Associated Infections in Atlanta, Georgia. The Decennial is held every ten years and is an opportunity to hear about: - New international and domestic perspectives.
- Updates on the scientific evidence in such areas as antimicrobial resistance, surveillance strategies, emerging infections, environmental transmission, new technologies.
- Translation of research and epidemiologic, organizational, and implementation principles into quality improvement practices.
Here are a just a few of the literally hundreds of oral abstracts that were presented:
Cleanliness of Portable Medical Equipment Cleaned by Nursing Staff
The Long-Term Impacts of an Infection Control Network on the Rates of Healthcare Associated Infections in Community Hospitals: An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure
Effectiveness of Gram-Negative Bacterial Infection Control Interventions: A Systematic Review and Business Case Analysis
Contact Isolation Precautions: More Is Not Necessarily Better
Maximizing Healthcare Worker Hand Hygiene: A Study of the Optimal Number and Location of Alcohol Based Hand Rub Dispensers
Successful Utilization of Alcohol Sensor Technology to Monitor and Report Hand Hygiene Compliance
NEW! Hand Hygiene Video
VigiGerm is a non-commercial social marketing brand created by the University of Geneva Hospitals to promote infection control. This hand hygiene video that they have created is an excellent example of using social marketing to change behaviour. Enjoy! Norovirus Exclusion Policy
In the midst of a particularly busy norovirus season, it is important that we implement and evaluate the outbreak control measures that we are using. Most facilities in Ontario use a 48-hour work exclusion policy for affected staff. However, a recent study evaluated the impact of a 48 versus 72-hour work exclusion policy for staff. The results of this study suggest that a longer exclusion policy reduces the number of cases among staff affected with viral gastroenteritis, possibly resulting in less staff absences. Click here for the entire study. Certification vs. Certificate
We frequently get questions about the difference between Certification in Infection Control and a course that provides a certificate. The North Western Ontario Infection Control Network has created a short article that describes certification. Click here to read this article. |
