Position Yourself to Succeed in 2010

When times are tough, you need to make a difference if you want to stand out. Secure yourself as an invaluable resource in your organization by focusing on your proven track record. Make sure that you are ready to communicate the following information to your colleagues and your supervisors:
  • How things are different in your organization because of the work you do.
  • What value your work adds to the bottom line of the organization.
  • How the organization would suffer if your efforts diminished or disappeared.
  • What the organization is holding you accountable for this year.
  • What stories your stakeholders - colleagues, patients, clients, residents, visitors - tell about how you have assisted them or created a safer, healthier environment for them.

Adapted from Communication Briefings ideas that work: Position yourself to succeed in 2010. Volume 29, No. 3; January 2010

Congratulations to both Mary Catherine Orvidas and Anne Bialachowski for passing their SARE exams. Mary Catherine is a member of the Hamilton Health Sciences Infection Control Team. Anne Bialachowski is the Network Coordinator for the CSICN. The SARE exam (Self-Achievement Recertification Examination) is one of the options for CIC Candidate re-certification. Way to go Mary Catherine and Anne! We are proud of your accomplishments.
Mandatory Flu Shots?

Would you support madatory influenza vaccination for hospital employees? According to a study released in the January 2010 issue of the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, most healthcare workers approve of this idea. ARO Prevalence Study

CHICA-Canada is seeking two representatives to participate on an Antibiotic Resistant Organisms (ARO) Prevalence Study which will be conducted across Canada next year. The ARO Prevalence Study is designed to assess the prevalence of AROs in Canadian hospitals. If you are interested in learning more about the study or in serving as a CHICA-Canada representative for the study, go to the CHICA-Canada website.
Connecting and Empowering New ICPs

Several studies indicate that there is a shortage of ICPs in Canadian hospitals. In order to meet the needs of today's healthcare environment, new ICPs will be required to both shore up the current shortage and fill the gap left by those ICPs who will be retiring in the coming years. However, entering into this highly specialized field can be a daunting task for the new ICP. Much of the learning that is required is experiential, rather than cognitive. In order to assist in the development of new practitioners, seasoned ICPs will need to come alongside to guide and mentor. The Canadian Journal of Infection Control recently published an article by Anne Bialachowski highlighting the importance of the mentoring relationship. Click here to request a copy of this article.
JCYH Program for LTC

Over the holidays the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) released the Just Clean Your Hands Program for Long-Term Care (JCYH Program for LTC). The JCYH program has been successfully implemented in hospitals across the province, helping to improve hand hygiene for health care providers and, in turn, improve patient safety. And now, the MOHLTC has adapted the program for LTC homes. You can check out the main components of the program by going to the JCYH Program for LTC website. The MOHLTC has also updated the main Just Clean Your Hands website. To see how CSICN is supporting the roll-out of the program, click here.
Environmental Cleaning Program

The Provincial Infectious Diseases Advisory Committee (PIDAC) has developed a comprehensive best practice document on environmental cleaning that should be released in early 2010. The Regional Infection Control Networks are collaborating with the Ontario Healthcare Housekeepers Association (OHHA) and the Canadian Association of Environmental Management (CAEM) to create a training program to support the provincial roll-out of the information, tools and resources in the document to environmental services staff in healthcare organizations across the province. A project team with environmental services representation from Ontario hospitals, long-term care homes and other healthcare agencies has been established and met in mid-December to start assembling the training curriculum. It is our goal to have training packages available to health care facilities across the province in Spring 2010. Click here to request more information about this exciting project.
