You say you were confused by the game play during the recent DSDG vs Denver bout? Well you weren't the only one -- many fans were disappointed by the lack of action during this bout and wanted clarification on what was happening and whether or not it was legal. Denver was using a strategy employed by some west coast leagues, that involves stopping on the track or skating extremely slowly, in order to trap opponents or cause them to commit penalties.

Usually this is only done during a few strategic jams that are pivotal to the outcome of the game, but a few teams have used this ploy throughout an entire bout to ensure a wide point spread. Although some leagues plan to adopt this controversial form of play, the Atlanta Roller girls will continue to bring you the rapid, hard-hitting derby action you've come to love.

ARG has been selected by the WFTDA to host the nation's South Central Regional Tournament, September 25-27, 2009. This Southern Fried Smackdown will be the largest roller derby event ever held in the Southeast, with athletes and fans from more than 15 states in attendance!

Atlanta's All-Stars, the Dirty South Derby Girls, took home the Championship trophy on July 18th in the Rocket City Rumble hosted by the Dixie Derby Girls from Hunstville, Alabama! In the one-day, single-elimination tourney, DSDG beat Northwest Arkansas 195-45 and Nashville 100-61. Congratulations ladies, we're proud of you! We know you couldn't have done it without your amazing mascot, TI Pufnstuff! Thanks TI!

Much like other sports, various Flat Track Roller Derby organizations keep track of teams and how they perform against each other. Currently, there are 3 main systems that rank Flat Track Roller Derby teams across the country and each system uses different methods. Sometimes at our Dirty South Derby Girls games you'll see some large gaps between the teams' scores. These point spreads contribute directly to how the Atlanta Rollergirls are ranked by each of the 3 main systems. Currently, there is no "mercy rule" in the sport of Flat Track Roller Derby to keep higher skilled teams from racking up the points and it's in the interest of the team to do so for ranking purposes.

Below are the 3 main ranking systems that are most closely watched in the world of Flat Track Roller Derby with some info on each. You can visit the websites listed for more information on each method.

WFTDA - The WFTDA (Women's Flat Track Derby Association) as an organization determines it's rankings based on the input of all member leagues quarterly. For its quarterly rankings, the WFTDA ranks by regions only (see region map here
). After the national tournament each year in November or December, the WFTDA releases the official national rankings of the top seven teams in the nation.  Currently, DSDG is tied for 4th/5th place in the South Central Region.

Flat Track StatsFlat track stats is a statistical only ranking, based on a rather complicated algorithm.  Currently, DSDG is ranked 28th in the country, but that changes weekly!

Derby News Network The biggest fans and best minds of derby get together once a month and come up with the top 25 rankings in the country.  Atlanta is hovering on the edge of breaking into the top 25, and has gotten honorable mention the past two months.

Are you tired of watching from the sidelines as your rollergirl friends have all the fun? Do you wish it was you being knocked into a crowd of adoring spectators? Well, why wait any longer?  The Atlanta Rollergirls are looking for daring women (21+) to train in the fine art of kicking butt.  Come on out to our last skills workshop on September 5th, from 9am to 11am, and we'll teach you everything you need to know about roller derby—no skating experience required! Our training workshops are held at the All American Skating Center, and only cost $5! Do it—we dare you!

The first round of assessments will be held on Sunday, September 20th from 10 am-1 pm. For more information, please visit our recruitment page. If you'd like to be a part of the action, but hip checks aren't really your thing, consider training to be a referee or non-skating official. This is a great way for guys to be involved as well. Anyone who is interested should contact our Head of Games Commission, Shannihilator.
