If you're interested in the Atlanta Rollergirls, and want to spend some one-on-one time with us, you're in luck! On Wednesday, March 31st, we're hosting a Skate Party! Whether you dream of being on a team or just meeting the athletes that make up our league, then this is a good place to start. Come one, come all, young or old, girl or boy. Bring your family! Bring your friends! Step right up! Rent a pair of quad skates, and hit the rink with us! Don't worry, we'll leave our pads and helmets at home—because derby girls don't ALWAYS like to hit when we're on skates. We also love the Hokey Pokey and Cupid Shuffle. We're hoping that you do too! Be there or be a square: ARG Skate Party Date: March 31st Time: 6-8:30pm Admission: $5 8 games, 5 teams, and one championship. Winners: Atlanta’s All-Star Dirty South Derby Girls! A tournament that Atlanta wasn’t sure they could fit into their schedule, turned into an exciting weekend to start the season. Atlanta, currently ranked fifth in the WFTDA South Central Region, upset Dallas (ranked fourth) who upset Houston (ranked third). In layman’s terms, Atlanta just kicked some serious booty. DSDG played three games and came out victorious in every single one. The announcers named The Merchant of Menace the tournament MVP. We would like to thank Dallas for hosting such an amazing and fun tournament. Hopefully we’ll get to meet again soon! If you love a parade, come celebrate with us at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 13th. Sure, it’s the day of our first home bout, but the Atlanta Rollergirls wouldn’t miss this downtown party! Find us donning green on the route down Peachtree Street, or join us at the post-parade festival at Underground Atlanta. We’ll be rolling through, handing out goodies, and mingling with the crowd. Then come to the Yaarab Shrine Center and see us compete! On Saturday, April 3rd, your Dirty South Derby Girls will be taking on not one, not two, but three California teams. First, Atlanta will play against the San Diego Derby Dolls’ all-star team, the Wildfires. Then they’ll move on to defend their honor against LA’s Angel City Derby Girls’ all-star team, the Hollywood Scarlets. For ticket information, visit this website. On Sunday, DSDG will try their skills on a banked track. San Diego is offering some crossover training and will host a scrimmage. This is a friends-only bout, so be sure and let us know in advance if you plan to stop by to cheer. Atlanta Magazine ARG is storming the shelves of your nearest news stand. Be sure to snatch up the March issue of Atlanta Magazine! Our very own Toxic Shocks grace the pages, as writer Hollis Gillespie describes her encounter with the Shocks' Bat L. Royale. Readers get a track-side look at life inside the rink, as well as what goes on when the skates come off. Hard knocks, fishnets and attitude are just a few things it takes to be a derby girl. You'll have to grab the mag to find out the rest. Or look here. Fox 5 with Hollis Gillespie If you're curious to know more about the writer behind the Atlanta Magazine ARG derby feature, you can still catch Fox 5's Good Day Atlanta interview with author Hollis Gillespie. She answers questions like why she took her 9-year-old daughter to a derby bout, what she loves most about derby, and why she thinks derby girls are unique. Of course we agree with every word she says, but you can see for yourself here. PlywoodPeople.com Deathskull, ARG president and jammer extraordinaire, was recently featured in a Plywood People article on Plywood.com. In it, she describes her love for derby, derby 101, and how she came up with her derby name, as well as why roller derby just generally rocks. Check it out here. You’ll even see some loving words from Mama Skully, Deathskull’s mother. Roller derby is fast-paced, demanding that teams play offense and defense simultaneously. Like the pick or the screen in basketball, skaters can form a "wall" side by side, trapping an opposing player behind them. Walls are an effective and fast way to contain the opposing jammer, so she can't score points, or hold back opposing blockers to open up a clear path for their own jammer. We promised you last month a quick description of “Lead Jammer.” Here it is! The Lead Jammer is the first jammer to make it through the pack legally. This means no fouls on her way through. Once she’s declared Lead Jammer by the refs, she has the power to end the jam by signaling with her hands on her hips in an up-and-down motion. This is a strategic advantage for a team that wants to prevent the other jammer from scoring. |
