Atlanta DSDG 124 vs. Kansas City Roller Warriors 111
The Roller Warriors from Kansas City wielded their weapons against Atlanta's Dirty South Derby Girls for the first bout of the evening. These closely ranked teams (KC is #2 in South Central, Atlanta is #3) each knew they had a strong battle ahead of them, and both took that fighting instinct to the track. An injury for Kansas City during warm-up didn't slow them down, and they held a lead on Atlanta well into the first half. Atlanta went on a scoring run right at the end of the first half to pull into the lead. The second half started with Kansas City holding on tight, unwilling to let Atlanta control game play. But the Roller Warriors were not successful in regaining the lead; with power jams by Wheelin' Jennings and The Merchant of Menace, the Dirty South Derby Girls sent Kansas City packin' with a final score of 124 - 111. MVPs were Alassin Sane for DSDG and BruzHer for KCRW.
Toxic Shocks 93 vs. Denim Demons 116
The Toxic Shocks and the Denim Demons wheeled onto the track, each team undefeated in the season thus far. With both teams hungry to hold on to their winning streak, this was sure the be a devilish duel to the death. The Demons skated off with the lead, holding the Shocks at 13 - 0 well into the first half. Shocks' jammer Harper Lethal and substitute jammer Nora Gretz helped to rack up some points right before half time, giving the Shocks a better chance at pulling ahead. The Demons, however, continued to dominate in the second half with strong jams by Deathskull and Demanda Rumble. The Demons took the win, remaining undefeated and leaving the Shocks green with envy over a final score of 116 - 93. MVPs were Switchblade Siouxsie for the Demons and Harper Lethal for the Shocks.
Rumble Bs vs Charlotte Rollergirls All-Stars Recap
On Saturday, June 12th, ARG’s B-team, the Rumble B’s, took on the WFTDA apprentice all-star team for the Charlotte Rollergirls. They kept Charlotte at low scores and crept back up.
Although ending in a loss, the B’s made a valiant effort and the score ended at 156-59, Charlotte. The MVP for Charlotte was the hard-hitting Pamela Ander-Slam. And for your local B-team, the amazing Quadratic Abrasion.
Sake Tuyas vs Gold Coast Derby Grrls Recap
The Sake Tuyas traveled to steamy Ft. Lauderdale this past weekend to show the Gold Coast Derby Grrls of the sunshine state how we do it in the A(tl). The game was delayed two hours on a count of rain, but the outdoor (!) track was eventually dried enough to get the derby action under way. After a tough first half which saw Atlanta down 24 to Ft. Lauderdale's 72 the hard hitting ninjas of the south rallied to bring it to an impressive 16 point game. Final score 98 Gold Coast, 89 Sake Tuyas

Toxic Shocks vs Sarasota Rollergirls
While the Sake Tuyas were on the east side of South Florida, kicking ass and taking names in Ft. Lauderdale on June 12, Atlanta's Toxic Shocks will be laying down the law on the west side on June 19, showing the Sarasota Rollergirls how it's done. And if hard-hitting derby action in sunny Sarasota was not enough to spark a road trip, maybe your love of the sea and the sweet hearts of the FL girls will. $1 for EVERY adult ticket sold will go to the Mote Marine Laboratory for their Oil Spill Response Fund. Rollergirl Training Workshop
There's a rollergirl in EVERY woman! No matter your size, shape, or age - there is something for you in roller derby.
If you've ever seen a bout and thought, "I could do that," or more likely, "I wish I could do that," roller derby is for you. We are holding our annual training workshops again starting Saturday, July 10, from 9-11 am at All American Skating Center.
Please bring any equipment you may have. Skates will be available at the rink if you don't have your own. Dress comfortably (it's a workout!) and bring water. Be prepared to show us what you're made of!!!
In the high-speed game of roller derby, it's not uncommon for a blocker to chase a jammer out ahead of the pack, but often she'll seem to just give up and let the jammer go. Now, if it were up to the blocker, she'd chase that jammer all the way around the track, back to jammer's bench after the jam, through the streets to the afterparty, and possibly as far as to her job on Monday. Rollergirls are nothing if not persistent. Thankfully for jammers everywhere, the rules don't permit this.
The section of track extending from 20 feet behind the pack to 20 feet ahead of it is known as the engagement zone, and blockers aren't permitted to leave it. A blocker who leaves the engagement zone is given a warning by the referees (see picture for handsignal), and if she doesn't immediately return to the engagement zone or if she hits anyone while outside of it, she gets a penalty for being out of play. Don't feel bad for the blocker though, that jammer's going to be coming back around in a moment, and the blocker will be waiting for her when she does.
