Bad to the BoneARG Gets "Bad to the Bone"
On April 17th, ARG will share the evening with the Atlanta Humane Society and our adorable, bad-to-the-bone animal friends. They’re looking for a good time, some TLC, and a new home. The AHS will bring pets to adopt, and for those who are not ready to commit, our furry friends will share the puppy love in “kissing” and “petting” booths—for a small donation to the Humane Society of course! At halftime, Atlanta Rollergirls will roll out the carpet for some special dogs on parade.
Can’t wait to donate? Look here.

March Bout Recap

Stix 139 vs. Sakes 49
The first home-team bout of season began with the Stix storming onto the track, gaining lead jammer often and holding the Sakes at only 2 points for the first 5 jams. The Sakes' quick-stepping jammers and hard hitting defense helped land them right on the heels of the Stix at halftime. The Sakes continued to fight and hold their place on the track through the remainder of the game. Power jams and Sake trips to the penalty box helped the Stix pull further ahead in the second half, ultimately leading to their win - 139 to 49.

DSDG 116 vs. Arch Rival (St Louis) 79
Dirty South Derby Girls opened the ARG home season with a solid victory over the Saint Louis Arch Rivals on March 13. DSDG took an early lead, controlling the jams, and keeping the Arch Rivals in the single digits well into the first half. Jammers The Merchant of Menace and Demi Gore each delivered awesome power jams, and DSDG moved into an impressive lead. In spite of a late first half rally by the Arch Rivals and some fierce jamming by St. Louis’s Black Market Baby, DSDG led at the half by a comfortable margin. In the second half the Arch Rivals came back to give the Dirty South Girls a tough fight, narrowing the point spread and putting more pressure on DSDG’s jammers. But Dirty South stayed tougher, never gave up their lead, and rolled on to a sweet victory, 116-79.

ARG v San Diego - Bout RecapDSDG v. San Diego Recap!
Easter weekend in Sunny San Diego proved to be full of hard-hitting action. The Dirty South Derby Girls took on not one, but two teams in the same night. First was a battle against the Angel City Derby Girls all-star team the Hollywood Scarlets.  The first few jams proved to be tough, but after DSDG got their bearings on the slick concrete floor, they took it with an amazing 209-24 score. Next DSDG took on the tough, and highly challenging, San Diego Derby Dolls (SDDD) flat-track all-star team, the Wildfires.

Although they are not a WFTDA team, their reputation precedes them and playing against such an amazing team shows all the gumption that is the Atlanta Rollergirls All-Star team. They were able to hold back SDDD for quite a bit and stayed strong through, but in the end fell prey to the Wildfires with a 153-61 score. An amazing two games made for another push towards nationals in the fall.

Skate Party Recap!Skate Party Was a Huge Success!
On March 31, ARG hosted a skate party at All-American Skating Rink in Stone Mountain. We played nice, shared our finery at a dress-like-a-rollergirl table, and scouted for the next generation of rollergirls (some day they’ll grow into those boutfits!). DJ Deathskull provided an awesome ‘80s playlist. It was especially great to see our old friends and retirees back on the floor, showing everyone that they still have all the moves. Thanks to old friends and new for coming to our party!

Inman Park Festival
On April 24, we’ll put on our skates, head to L5P, and join the Trash Monarch, the Inman Park Precision Attaché Drill Team, and other local notables in the annual Inman Park Festival Parade. Featuring live music, dance, arts and crafts, the Festival is an intown fave. The mile-long parade, known as Atlanta’s “quirkiest and most colorful” procession, begins at 2pm on Saturday, rain or shine, at the corner of Edgewood and Spruce.

Rollergirls Doing Good

ARG L.O.R.D (Lady of Retired Derby) Takillya Sunrise, aka Katrell Christie, is changing lives in India, one cup of tea at a time. After travelling to India in 2009, Katrell returned to the States with a new mission…to help the girls of the Darjeeling Orphanage through education.

She started The Learning Tea, a project to raise money to support the Darjeeling school and orphanage through the sale of the flavorful Darjeeling Green and Black teas she handpicked through hundreds of varieties, and by selling photo prints of her journey. 100% of the profits will benefit several projects for these children. Visit the project’s Website to learn all the deets and help better the lives of these precious girls. And…grab yourself some tea at our next bout…The Learning Tea will have a booth in the courtyard.

World Fitness Day
ARG ref and former freshmeat, Ref Comedy Jam, aka, Beth Kargel, is organizing World Fitness Day on May 1 at Atlanta's Georgia Dome--and the Atlanta Rollergirls will be in attendance!

Join actress, author, philanthropist, and fitness icon Jane Fonda as she launches World Fitness Day. Thousands will join Fonda in Atlanta to promote good health, including fitness and health experts Richard Simmons, Billy Blanks, Denise Austin, dancer/director/choreographer Debbie Allen, and Dr Sanjay Gupta. The morning of May 1st Atlanta’s Georgia Dome (the home of the Atlanta Falcons) will be transformed into a workout wonder when thousands converge on the field to celebrate the benefits of good health and bring greater attention to the importance of health and wellness throughout the life span. Fonda, celebrity trainers, and entertainers will fuel the energy of the day as exercise enthusiasts, of all fitness levels and ages, participate in a one-of-a-kind group workout. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (GCAPP), which Fonda founded in 1995.

Derby 101

Bridge PhotoEver wonder why you’ll see a skater all by herself with her arms stretched out in front and back of her, not hitting anyone or building a wall with anyone? It's not because she is confused and trying to get her bearings. It's because she is “bridging.”

Once the Jammer gets 20 feet outside the pack, the opposing blockers can no longer hit her. If a perceptive blocker sees this happening, she can sprint up roughly halfway between the pack “proper” and the blocker(s) and jammer ahead of the pack. This extends the length of the pack and keeps the jammer in play, allowing the “Bridger’s” teammates to continue to engage (ie, hit) the jammer.
