Sojourn Newsletter
September 2010

"You can buy the look, but you can't buy the grease"
- Mark Ambrosino, Co-founder

Welcome to the first Sojourn Records newsletter. There is lots of good news as we move out of the summer and into a busy Fall.

Danny Kalb, Al Kooper and Roy Blumenfeld begin a new record at the Madhouse studio

Danny Kalb is one of the founding members of the Blues Project and released I'm Gonna Live The Life I Sing About on Sojourn Records in 2009 to a multitude of rave reviews. Danny begins work on his newest record joined by two of the former members of the Blues Project, including its co-founder, Al Kooper and drummer, Roy Blumenfeld. Al Kooper is producing this release for Danny and recording is scheduled to begin shortly at Mark Ambrosino's Madhouse studio. The album has no title or release date as of yet but should be available in Spring 2011.

International Distribution

Sojourn has just signed a licensing deal with The Eighth Note, the largest music retailer and distributor in Israel. Sojourn will now have its full catalog available in Israel, England and France with future territories being considered. As the exclusive license holder for all Shlomo Carlebach and Neshama Carlebach recordings, Sojourn has wanted to extend its reach beyond USA and Canada where distribution is currently handled by Sony/RED. With this new partnership, Sojourn is excited at the possibilities for our artists given the diverse marketplace outside of North America that is very open and receptive to much of the music we are currently releasing.

Neshama Carlebach back on tour

Neshama will be back on tour after having her 2nd child (Micah) in late August. She will be the featured performer at the General Assembly event in New Orleans in November 2010 performing with the Green Pastures Baptist Choir. Also, Neshama and Sojourn are re-releasing Ha Neshama Shel Shlomo, which features Neshama and her father Shlomo Carlebach singing together shortly before his death in 1994. This is a completely remixed and remastered version and will include new recordings and archive video. It will be available for sale in late October/early November 2010.

Shlomo Carlebach Lost Masterpiece

Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach's Wake Up World was his fourth release in 1965 and considered to be one of his finest recordings. It has been unavailable for many years and original copies are rare. Mark Ambrosino, Sojourn co-founder, has painstakingly restored this recording to capture its original vitality, featuring stirring Shlomo vocal performances and strings and orchestration by Milton Okun. Sojourn will be re-releasing this classic recording in time for Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach's Yarhzeit on October 24th, 2010.

Sojourn Profile - George Howard

Sojourn's own, George Howard featured in an Artist's House clip as he teaches a master's class at Loyola University. This is great stuff. George was the former President of Rykodisk and is a professor at Loyola in New Orleans. George has worked with Sojourn since its inception in 2007.

Affiliated Artists
Sojourn has officially begun its "Affiliated Artist" division, offering invitations to select artists that are interested in being a part of Sojourn Records without signing an exclusive "deal". Robinson Treacher and Mark Donato joined up this last summer and we are honored and excited to have them onboard.

Theo Eastwind is off the subway platform and back in the studio at the Madhouse starting work on his second Sojourn release. Theo has also been out performing as a trio (Adam Roberts on bass and Mark Ambrosino on drums) appearing at a variety of clubs and festivals this past summer. Theo was hired to perform for walkers at Oprah's Walkathon in early May!

Ken Will Morton in Nashville
Ken Will Morton is in Nashville where he performed at The Bluebird Cafe in a Songwriter's Circle on Sept. 11th and will play at the Commodore on Sept 19th and at The Basement on Sept 21st.
