The Golden Ratio.
I use an accountant as I'm no good with numbers... except this one: 1:1.1618 - the golden ratio. It's found everywhere in good design - and like evolution, it takes time and effort to get right.
For over two thousand years Greek philosophers, artists, mathematicians and musicians alike have studied and applied the golden ratio to their work. It is the believed to be the most aesthetically pleasing of all proportions, from Leonardo Da Vinci using it to paint the Mona Lisa to the arrangement of leaves on the stem of a plant.

Take the human body for example, if you measure your hand length, and the length of your arm (wrist to elbow), the hand to arm ratio will be around 1:1.618. The same applies in your legs, feet and face proportions and top models like Kate Moss have shown to have the pefect golden ration. This is part of what makes something beautiful, and when applied to designing logos and website templates, becomes comfortable to the users eye.
Applying this Golden Ratio to your layouts, be it in Microsoft Word, Powerpoint or just taking pictures, over time I'm sure you'll notice the difference.
Recent Work...
I've just finished work on a new brand visual identity for a new start up company specialising in nursing home construction called Northcote Ryder. The brief was to create a simple yet strong identity that showed caring and innovation. A logo, business cards and stationery were designed and printed in time for an important meeting. And within the package included Word templates and email signatures ready to use.
