The Salvation Army remembers 2008 Hurricane Ike power outages

Another thank you to community supporters who helped in time of crisis.

On September 14, the residual windstorm from Hurricane Ike blew into Central Ohio, knocking down trees and structures and resulting in widespread power outages.

As the outages wore on and those already struggling in the worsening economy faced food shortages, The Salvation Army stepped forward to expand its food pantry services and pass out Kroger gift cards from its emergency disaster resources.

The Salvation Army is well known for disaster response at Hurricane Katrina, the 9-11 attacks and other national disasters. It's rare to get the chance to see the organization spring into action in the local community. We sent out our emergency canteen into the neighborhoods with hot food. We cooked up the perishables from our pantries that we couldn't keep cold, and invited the community.
