Comment on High Court MPs Appeal Ruling

The Sunlight Centre this morning welcomes the news that the three MPs and one Peer facing charges related to expenses fraud have lost their appeal in the High Court, where they claimed protection from prosecution by Parliamentary Privilege.

Harry Cole, Sunlight's Media Director, whose letter of complaint triggered the Metropolitan Police investigation into Jim Devine MP said:

"We have always argued that MPs are not above the law and we welcome the Lord Chief Justice's ruling that politicians can and should be treated just like any other suspected common criminals."

Paul Staines, founder of the Sunlight Centre and better known as the blogger "Guido Fawkes" said:

"I won't be satisfied until politicians are in jail for stealing from the taxpayers. Law makers can not be be law breakers and should be treated harshly in view of their position of power."

Both Cole and Staines are available for media comment today.
