“Economic Train Wreck” Would Follow EPA Rule on Greenhouse Gas
U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski calls it “our worst option for reducing the emissions blamed for climate change.”
Montana’s U.S. House member, Denny Rehberg, says it would “pour concrete into the gears of economic recovery.”
Concern is mounting among many members of Congress -- Democrats and Republicans -- that unless they act, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will begin to regulate greenhouse gases under the federal Clean Air Act starting this March.
As a faltering U.S. economy struggles to get back on its feet, this assumption of widespread regulatory power by EPA could not come at a worse time.
In an effort to prevent what she predicts will be an “economic train wreck” if EPA regulates greenhouse gases, Sen. Murkowski introduced a resolution in the Senate last week that, if passed by both houses, will stop the federal agency from exercising unprecedented and unilateral power over industries, small businesses and the general public.
Rep. Rehberg, along with 150 other House members, cosponsored a bill last week that also aims to prevent federal bureaucrats from usurping the authority of elected representatives.
Rehberg called EPA’s action “an end-around on the American people. The EPA works for us, not the other way around.”
The Montana Petroleum Association expressed its concern about the consequences to Montana’s economy if EPA begins to regulate many small sources of carbon emissions – even the furnace in your house.
Montana’s unemployment rate remains painfully unacceptable. While the number of jobs in many industries, such as construction, has declined dramatically, jobs in the oil and gas industry have in fact increased since the start of the recession. We cannot afford to permit federal bureaucrats to deal another blow to business and industry at a time when unemployment lags at a 26-year high.
The Montana Petroleum Association, Inc. is a voluntary, non-profit trade association, serving a membership of oil and natural gas producers, gathering and pipeline companies, petroleum refiners, service providers and consultants.
